Nolasco helps Marlins blank A's

Jun 30, 2011 - 6:05 AM Oakland, CA (Sports Network) - Hanley Ramirez and Logan Morrison provided home runs behind Ricky Nolasco's second career shutout, as the Florida Marlins beat the Oakland Athletics, 3-0.

The teams have traded shutouts to begin the three-game series, with Oakland's Gio Gonzalez helping to silence the Marlins in a 1-0 decision on Tuesday.

Nolasco (5-4) showed equally dominant stuff to even the set, scattering five hits and two walks while fanning three in the fifth complete game of his career.

Three of the Marlins' four wins this month have come in the last seven games.

Guillermo Moscoso (2-4) took the loss despite striking out eight in a six- inning start. He gave up four hits and did not walk a batter.

Only one of the three runs Moscoso allowed was earned because Cliff Pennington's error on the first at-bat of the game allowed Emilio Bonifacio to reach base. Two outs later, Ramirez went deep to straightaway center for his first home run since May 21.

Morrison added a solo shot to right in the fourth, the first earned run Moscoso allowed in four starts.

Nolasco got out of bases-loaded jam in the first frame by getting Ryan Sweeney on a flyout to center, then set down 15 in a row after walking David DeJesus in the second inning.

Mike Stanton went 0-for-4 at the plate, but helped his starter in the field when he came down with Pennington's deep fly drive to right in the sixth, as he crashed into the wall while making the grab to take away a potential extra- base hit.

"We didn't have much to show for some pretty good at-bats today, which adds to the frustration," A's interim manager Bob Melvin said.

Nolasco needed 98 pitches to get through eight innings and worked around a two-out single in the ninth to finish off his gem and snap Oakland's six-game home winning streak.

"Some of these guys need to find out that they can go nine innings. That should be the goal of every pitcher on every club, to go nine. Unfortunately, we won't let them," Marlins interim manager Jack McKeon said.

Game Notes

Nolasco picked up his first win since May 24. His other shutout came against the Giants on August 19, 2008...The Marlins wrap up their franchise-worst June slate on Thursday with Chris Volstad toeing the rubber against Trevor Cahill. Florida is 4-23 this month ..The A's have hit one home run or fewer in each of the last 32 games, the longest such stretch in Oakland history...Oakland pitchers accounted for 13 strikeouts.
