Hudson aims to continue success against O's
Jul 2, 2011 - 2:44 PMVideo
Hudson tossed eight scoreless innings to get the win two starts ago, then followed that effort up by not allowing a run in six innings to the San Diego Padres on Sunday. However, he did not get a decision in that one, as the Braves lost 4-1.
Run support has been a problem all season for Hudson, who has given up more than three runs in eight of his last 12 starts, but is just 4-3 in that span. Interleague play has also given him fits, as he owns just a 3-14 mark with a 6.24 ERA in 19 starts against the AL since coming over to Atlanta.
Hudson should be able to get back on track tonight, as he faces a Baltimore team that he has owned over the course of his career, posting a 9-2 mark in 11 starts against them along with a 2.53 ERA.
Atlanta can only hope Hudson delivers the way Jair Jurrjens did in the opener. Jurrjens tossed a one-hit shutout to become the NL's first 11-game winner in the Braves' 4-0 win.
"It was a really nice, easy game for me out there tonight," said Jurrjens, who carried a no-hitter into the seventh, while lowering his ERA to 1.89 on the year. "It's always good to have one of those games, just getting in and out, in and out, keeping the defense off the field. I just kept throwing strikes there and let the defense do the rest."
Jason Heyward hit his first home run in over two months, a two-run shot in the sixth, while Jordan Schafer had two hits and two runs scored for the Braves, who have won four straight.
Jeremy Guthrie (3-10) was tagged with the loss as he gave up four runs -- three earned -- on six hits over seven-plus innings for the Orioles, who have dropped their past four games.
"He's pitched well all year over there so we know we were facing a challenge," said Guthrie about Jurrjens. "He's just been dominating lately and he showed that again tonight."
Tonight, Baltimore will rely on righty Jake Arrieta, who is 9-6 on the year with a 4.50 ERA.
Arrieta, though, hasn't pitched since winning for the third time in his last four starts on June 20 in Pittsburgh. He gave up three runs and three hits in five innings of that one, but had his next start pushed back because of inflammation in his right elbow.
He has never faced the Braves.
Baltimore took two of three from Atlanta the last time these teams met back in 2009. The Braves, though, have won 10 of the last 13 in the series in Atlanta.
