Cubs, Nats resume series in DC
Jul 5, 2011 - 2:50 PM (Sports Network) - Journeyman right-hander Ramon Ortiz makes his first big- league appearance in a Chicago uniform tonight, when the Cubs continue a four- game series with the Washington Nationals at Nationals Park. The Nationals got the matchup started in dramatic fashion on Monday night, winning 5-4 in the 10th inning when Jayson Werth stole third, then scored on a wild pitch.
Werth led off the inning with a walk, then moved up to second on a sacrifice bunt by pitcher Livan Hernandez, who was pinch-hitting for reliever Henry Rodriguez.
Taking advantage of an aloof Aramis Ramirez at third, Werth stole the bag then came home when Carlos Marmol threw a wild slider that skipped to the backstop.
Laynce Nix went 2-for-4 with a triple and a pair of RBI and Werth drove in two runs to secure Washington's third win in five games.
Rodriguez (3-1) earned the win after tossing a perfect 10th inning.
Marlon Byrd went 2-for-3 with an RBI and Alfonso Soriano drove in two runs for the Cubs, who have lost three of their last four.
Ortiz is getting the call for injured starter Carlos Zambrano, who's on the disabled list with a sore lower back.
Another starter, Ryan Dempster, is also on the DL, prompting Monday replacement Casey Coleman and Sunday winner Rodrigo Lopez into emergency roles.
All five regular Cubs starters have been on the DL at least once this season.
Ortiz made two starts with the Los Angeles Dodgers last season and hadn't previously made a big-league start since making 10 with the Minnesota Twins in 2007.
He's won 85 games in the majors since debuting with the Anaheim Angels in 1999, including a career-high 16 in 2003.
The 38-year-old Dominican won 11 games in 33 starts with the Nationals in 2006 and is 1-1 against them in five career appearances -- two starts.
For Washington, 25-year-old lefty Ross Detwiler will also make his first appearance of the 2011 season.
The sixth overall pick in the 2007 draft made one appearance that season in the majors, then started 14 times in 15 appearances in 2009.
He was 1-3 with a 4.25 earned run average in eight games for the Nationals last season and was called up from Triple-A Syracuse for tonight's appearance after the Nats' doubleheader on Saturday.
He had a 4.53 ERA in 16 starts at Syracuse this season.
Detwiler has never faced the Cubs.
The Cubs took four of six from the Nats last season and have won 11 of the last 16 overall matchups.
