Haren, Callaspo help Angels sweep Mariners

Jul 11, 2011 - 12:23 AM Anaheim, CA (Sports Network) - Dan Haren threw 8 2/3 strong innings and Alberto Callaspo had a two-run double in the eighth inning to give the Angels a 4-2 victory and a four-game sweep of the Mariners.

Haren (10-5) allowed two runs on five hits and two walks while striking out eight in the Angels' fourth straight win and their eighth in nine games.

"I really didn't feel good all day, but as the game went on I got a little better. I was throwing strikes and locating," said Haren. "I would have liked to have finished, but I respect my manager and everything worked out."

Jordan Walden struck out the one batter he faced to earn his 20th save of the season.

Felix Hernandez allowed two runs on six hits and a walk while fanning six through seven innings for Seattle, but David Pauley (5-3) relieved him in the eighth and allowed the deciding runs.

Adam Kennedy knocked in both of the Mariners' runs as they were handed their fifth consecutive defeat.

Pauley started the eighth and allowed a leadoff single to Torii Hunter, who then advanced to second on a Bobby Abreu groundout. Pauley fanned Vernon Wells on a 3-2 changeup and gave an intentional walk to Howie Kendrick before Callaspo laced a double into right-center field for the lead.

Haren started the ninth inning, seeking his third complete game of the year. He allowed a leadoff double to Dustin Ackley, but retired the next two batters before being replaced by Walden.

Walden then fanned Franklin Gutierrez on a 101 mph fastball to end a nine- pitch at-bat and the game.

Brendan Ryan singled with one out in the first and Ackley followed with a walk before both moved up a bag on Justin Smoak's flyout to deep center field. Kennedy came up next and slapped a single through the left side of the infield, scoring Ryan and Ackley to give the Mariners a 2-0 advantage.

In the third inning, Abreu was awarded a walk by home plate umpire Gerry Davis despite only receiving three balls. The mistake moved Hunter up to second and put the tying runs on base with one out.

Although the Angels didn't score, the blown call was similar to what happened to Seattle in a 1-0 loss to San Diego on July 2. Padres center fielder Cameron Maybin was mistakenly given first base on a three-ball walk in the fifth inning and scored the game's only run on an Alberto Gonzalez single.

Hernandez was able to overcome the call this time, though, by striking out Wells and inducing a flyout by Kendrick to end the inning.

The Angels knotted the game up in the fourth. Callaspo led off the frame with a single into right field, and Mark Trumbo followed by hammering the first pitch he saw over the left-field wall for his major league rookie-leading 17th homer.

"I thought Felix was good, but that one pitch got him," said Mariners manager Eric Wedge. "The two-out knocks hurt us."

After Trumbo's home run, Hernandez retired the final 12 batters he faced.

Mariners pitcher Michael Pineda was elected to play for the American League in the All-Star Game in place of Detroit Tigers pitcher Justin Verlander, who is ineligible to pitch due to starting Sunday...Ackley has now hit safely in 18 of 20 games since making his major league debut on June 17...Kendrick went 0- for-3 to snap a career-high 18 game hit streak...Haren improved to 9-4 in his career against the Mariners.
