Athletics take on Angels in finale at the Coliseum

Jul 17, 2011 - 3:02 PM (Sports Network) - In the finale of a four-game set today at the Coliseum, the Oakland Athletics will take on the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.

Yesterday these two divisional foes squared off twice, and in the earlier matchup Jered Weaver showed the Athletics why he holds an earned run average under two this season. The right-hander went 6 2/3 solid innings, yielding only a pair of runs to lead the Angels to a 4-2 win.

Weaver (12-4) scattered seven hits while fanning three and walking a pair to win his sixth straight decision. Weaver, who is unbeaten in his last 10 starts and hasn't lost since May 18 at Seattle, holds a 1.90 ERA this season.

Jordan Walden pitched a scoreless ninth to nail down his 21st save of the season.

Erick Aybar belted a solo home run and Bobby Abreu added a pair of RBI singles for the Angels, who have won nine of their past 11 contests.

Jemile Weeks laced an RBI single and Kurt Suzuki added an RBI on a sacrifice fly for the A's, who have dropped five of their last six games.

Trevor Cahill (8-8) worked seven innings in defeat, giving up three runs on five hits while striking out eight and walking five

In the later contest, Scott Sizemore knocked in the game-winning run with a hit into the right-center field gap in the bottom of the 10th inning, as the Athletics earned a 4-3 win over the Angels.

David DeJesus, Landon Powell and Coco Crisp also had an RBI apiece in defeat.

Brad Ziegler (3-1) worked a scoreless 10th in the nightcap for the A's, while Rich Thompson (1-3) surrendered the winning hit to Sizemore on a hanging breaking ball and absorbed the loss.

Mark Trumbo and Vernon Wells blasted home runs for the Angels.

In the series finale, the Angels will give the ball to Joel Pineiro, who is looking for his third straight win. The last time the veteran hurler was on the hill he held the Mariners to just three runs on 10 hits in seven innings.

It was the second straight strong showing for the crafty twirler, who is now 5-3 on the year. However, one of those losses came against Oakland earlier this season, as the A's crossed the plate four times against Pineiro.

Oakland has also been a tough test for the 32-year-old. In 27 appearances -- 22 starts -- the right-hander is just 9-9 with a lackluster 4.19 ERA.

Throughout the season Gio Gonzalez has been one of the most consistent pitchers in the AL. However, even good pitchers have bad days and that was the case for Gonzalez in his last start before the break.

In a loss to Texas, the hard-throwing southpaw was tattooed for seven runs on seven hits and three walks. Gonzalez surrendered three home runs and last just four innings.

It was his first loss in nearly a month, and now the young hurler is back on the hill looking to move on from that terrible performance. Gonzalez has already proven he can beat the Angels. Earlier this year the lefty held the Halos scoreless for seven innings, allowing just one hit, while striking out seven batters.
