Seattle tries to cool off red-hot Rangers

Jul 17, 2011 - 3:03 PM (Sports Network) - Blake Beavan will make his third career start this afternoon for Seattle, as the Mariners are set to close out their four-game series against the red-hot Texas Rangers at Safeco Field

Beavan has been successful since being brought up to the big leagues. In his first start the young hurler grabbed a victory, holding the Padres to just one run in seven innings.

He did not claim a decision in his second matchup, but the right-hander was still solid. Against the Angels, Beavan tossed 6 1/3 innings, surrendering just two runs on six hits, two of which were home runs.

The last time Matt Harrison was on the hill for Texas he tossed one of his best games of the season, and now the southpaw will try to continue that success this afternoon.

In his most recent victory over Oakland, Harrison tossed 7 2/3 innings of scoreless baseball, scattering six hits, while striking out seven batters in the win.

Harrison has enjoyed moderate success against Oakland in his career, posting a 2-1 ledger with a 3.19 earned run average.

Texas swept Seattle in three games from April 4-6 in Arlington, but the Mariners returned the favor by taking two of three matchups May 3-5 in the Emerald City.

On Saturday, Ian Kinsler hit two solo homers, C.J. Wilson threw seven strong innings and the Rangers rolled to a 5-1 victory -- their 10th in a row.

Wilson (10-3) remained unbeaten since May 20, allowing just five hits and three walks while striking out seven. Mark Lowe and Neftali Feliz finished the game with one scoreless inning apiece.

At the other end of the spectrum, Mariners ace Felix Hernandez (8-8) stayed winless in his last four starts after giving up four runs on nine hits in 7 2/3 innings. He struck out six and walked one.

Ichiro Suzuki's RBI single in the fifth may have halted Seattle's scoreless innings streak at a franchise-record 30, but it barely got in the way of the Rangers extending their winning streak.

Suzuki's base hit in the fifth also halted Texas' shutout streak at 33 innings. The AL West-leading Rangers, who are three games ahead of the Angels in the division, had won the first two games of this four-game series by a combined score of 9-0.

Texas won 11 straight games from June 12-24, 2010.
