Weiland hopes for better results his second time around against O's
Jul 18, 2011 - 6:18 PMVideo
Weiland was ejected in his big league debut last Sunday after hitting Baltimore's Vladimir Guerrero in the fifth inning. There was no intent by Weiland, whose sinker just didn't sink. But both teams had been warned an inning earlier when Kevin Youkilis was hit and that came on the heels of a wild melee earlier in the series and string of hit batsmen all weekend.
"When it happened, I was like, 'Oh, well, I mean, that's the rules, I guess,'" said Weiland, who became the first Red Sox player and seventh player in major league history ejected in his debut. "I didn't think the warnings were really warranted. Youkilis got hit on a changeup, so that was a little confusing we got warned."
Things weren't going well for the 24-year-old right-hander before that, though, as the Orioles batted around in the second. He gave up six runs and eight hits with a pair of walks in the four-plus inning effort.
"It's not exactly what you have written out and planned for," Weiland said. "It was a great experience, and I've got the first one under the belt. Obviously, I would have liked a few things to have gone differently."
Weiland had been 8-6 with a 3.00 ERA at Triple-A Pawtucket. He'd also struck out 99 in 93 innings and walked only 37.
Weiland should have plenty of support, as Boston had totaled 47 runs and hit 18 homers in its six games prior to a 1-0 win over the Tampa Bay Rays in 16 innings Sunday.
Heading into action on Monday, the Red Sox are the only major league team this year that has five players with at least 13 home runs: Jacoby Ellsbury (13), Dustin Pedroia (13), Ortiz (19), Adrian Gonzalez (17) and Kevin Youkilis (13).
Baltimore, meanwhile, will counter with righty Jeremy Guthrie, who has lost his last four outings and leads the league with 13 losses. Guthrie was also the one who hit Youkilis on July 10, leading to Weiland's eventual ejection.
Guthrie lost his first start out of the break to the Cleveland Indians, getting hit for six runs and five hits in five innings. He also walked four in that one, dropping him to 3-13 on the year to go along with a 4.45 ERA.
"I felt like I wasn't able to throw the ball where I wanted to, either ahead -- I wasn't able to get ahead [much] in the count -- or when I fell behind, I had a really hard time throwing strikes and getting back into it," Guthrie said. "It's tough to put your team in the hole like that."
He absorbed the loss in relief in that July 10 appearance at Fenway and is a miserable 1-8 lifetime versus the Red Sox with a 4.55 ERA in 17 games, 15 of which have been starts.
Starting pitching has really become a problem in Baltimore, as O's starters have lasted seven innings just twice over the last 30 games and have compiled a 7.67 ERA (140 2/3 IP, 120 runs).
The group is just 3-12 over the last 20 games and has allowed 10 hits or more in 11 of the last 12 contests.
While Baltimore may be struggling, it can't fault Nick Markakis of late. Heading into action on Monday he had hit safely in 31 of his last 33 games and is hitting .395 since June 8 -- the highest average of any player in the majors.
