Weaver goes for Halos in Cleveland

Jul 26, 2011 - 2:33 PM (Sports Network) - Sizzling right-hander Jared Weaver aims to keep a seven- decision win streak alive tonight when the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim head to Progressive Field for game two of a three-game series with the host Cleveland Indians.

The Indians broke on top of the matchup in dramatic fashion in Monday's opener, when Jason Kipnis' first major league hit - a bases-loaded single with two outs in the ninth - capped a two-run frame and handed the Indians a 3-2 win.

Michael Brantley led off the inning with a single off Jordan Walden (2-3) and stole second to put the tying run in scoring position for Travis Hafner, who doubled to left-center to score Brantley for the tie.

Carlos Santana then walked and Jack Hannahan was hit by a pitch to load the bases.

Hisanori Takahashi came in from the bullpen and retired Travis Buck on a force play grounder. Kipnis, who has spent most of this year at Triple-A Columbus, then lined a base hit to right field to snap Cleveland's four-game skid.

Asdrubal Cabrera slapped an RBI single, while Tony Sipp (5-2) tossed one scoreless inning in relief to earn the win.

Bobby Abreu clubbed a two run homer and Alberto Callaspo added a double for the Angels, who are 5-5 in their past 10 games.

Weaver, a 28-year-old Californian and the American League's starter in the 2011 All-Star Game, fell to 6-4 on the season with a 3-0 loss at Seattle on May 18 - his fourth straight defeat after a 6-0 start.

He's been unbeatable since, however, winning seven decisions in 11 subsequent starts while not allowing more than three earned runs in any outing and holding foes to one run or less eight times.

He tossed seven innings of scoreless ball with six strikeouts in his most recent effort on July 21, allowing seven hits in the Angels' 1-0 defeat of Texas.

Weaver is 4-2 lifetime against the Indians in 11 starts.

For Cleveland, Texas-born righty Josh Tomlin aims to continue an unbeaten string of his own.

The 26-year-old is 4-0 in seven starts since his last loss, a 9-1 defeat at Yankee Stadium in New York in which he was tagged for 12 hits and six runs in five innings.

He's allowed three runs or fewer four times in seven tries since, and escape with a 6-5 win at Baltimore on July 15 in spite of allowing five runs on six hits in five innings.

The Indians are 12-8 in Tomlin's 20 starts this year and the former 19th-round draft pick is 7-1 in 10 starts at Progressive Field.

The Angels won four of their first six versus the Indians this year, with each of those previous meetings taking place in Anaheim.
