M's try to end 16-game skid, but face Yanks' Sabathia

(Sports Network) - The Seattle Mariners try to end their franchise-worst losing streak this evening when they continue a three-game series against the hosting New York Yankees.

Unfortunately, though, the Mariners have lost 14 of their last 18 in the Bronx and tonight go up against CC Sabathia, who is looking to become the majors' first 15-game winner.

Seattle's woes continued in the opener of this set on Monday, as Mark Teixeira smacked a two-run homer off Jason Vargas in the first inning and Derek Jeter added a solo shot in the third to pace the Yankees to a 10-3 victory, extending the team's franchise-worst losing streak to 16 games.

The skid for the Mariners is the longest in the majors since Kansas City dropped 19 in a row during the 2005 season. The American League record is 21, set by Baltimore at the start of the 1988 season.

Teixeira and Jeter knocked in three runs, as the Yankees won for the seventh time in 10 contests. Curtis Granderson also drove in two runs and New York didn't miss a beat after the start of the game was delayed nearly two hours by rain.

Freddy Garcia (9-7) yielded eight hits and fanned five over 7 2/3 innings to win his second straight start.

Vargas (6-9) was charged with seven hits and eight runs -- four earned -- over four innings to drop his fourth consecutive start. He fell to 0-3 with an 8.14 ERA lifetime against the Yankees.

"We're trying to keep our spirits up," Seattle infielder Adam Kennedy said. "You just talk about your schedule tomorrow. We're all fighting through this together."

Sabathia, meanwhile, will be trying to bounce back following his first loss in more than a month on Thursday against Tampa Bay, as he allowed two runs and five hits in eight innings. He also struck out eight, but walked four and fell to 14-5 on the year to go along with a 2.62 ERA.

"It's one of those of things," said Sabathia, who had won his seven previous starts. "It's baseball."

The big left-hander beat the Mariners earlier in the year and is 10-4 lifetime against them with a 2.49 ERA.

Seattle will counter with righty Doug Fister, who is 3-11 on the year with a 3.30 ERA. Fister did not get a decision on Thursday in Toronto and did not pitch well, surrendering five runs (four earned) and five hits in six innings of his team's 7-5 loss.

Fister has faced the Yankees twice and is 1-1 with a 7.36 ERA.

The Mariners took two of three from the Yankees in Seattle earlier in the season.
