Carpenter aims to stay hot for Cardinals in battle with Astros

Jul 27, 2011 - 3:03 PM (Sports Network) - Veteran right-hander Chris Carpenter can continue a recent streak of success tonight when the St. Louis Cardinals host the Houston Astros in the third game of a four-game series at Busch Stadium.

On Tuesday, Albert Pujols hit a two-run homer and David Freese added a solo blast to carry the Cardinals past the lowly Astros, 3-1.

Jake Westbrook (9-4) started the second meeting of the four-game set and lasted six frames, allowing one run on seven hits to earn the win.

Jason Motte, Lance Lynn and Fernando Salas each tossed a scoreless inning of relief, with the latter working around a two-out walk in the ninth to post his 19th save of the season.

St. Louis, which has won five of six to stay atop the NL Central, held Houston to a 1-for-11 effort with runners in scoring position.

Brett Myers (3-11) dropped his fifth straight decision despite tossing an eight-inning complete game, as he was charged with three runs on 11 hits.

Carpenter, a 36-year-old New Hampshire native, was just 1-7 on the season after dropping a 5-4 decision to Kansas City in an interleague matchup on June 17.

He's been lights out in six starts since, winning five decisions while pitching seven innings or more five times and trimming his earned run average from 4.47 to 3.73.

He went eight innings and allowed four runs on 10 hits in a 6-4 defeat of Pittsburgh in his last start on July 22. He tossed eight shutout innings against Cincinnati to win his last home decision on July 4.

Carpenter is 2-2 in 10 starts this season at Busch Stadium.

He's 7-5 lifetime against the Astros in 17 starts.

Houston replies with 26-year-old Texan Bud Norris, who went to 6-2 in his career against the Cardinals with an eight-inning start on June 8.

In that game, at Houston, Norris allowed just a solo home run while walking two and striking out six en route to a 4-1 triumph.

He's won just one of four decisions in seven starts since, however, and was beaten, 4-2, by the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field in his last outing on July 22.

Norris is 2-4 in road starts in 2011 with a 4.94 ERA.

St. Louis has won eight of its 10 matchups with the Astros this season.
