Danks, De Aza lead ChiSox past Tigers

Chicago, IL (Sports Network) - A stellar outing from John Danks and an unlikely home run from Alejandro De Aza powered the Chicago White Sox to a 2-1 victory over the Detroit Tigers in the rubber match of a three-game series.

Danks (4-8) allowed just one run on six hits and three walks while tying a career-high with 10 strikeouts over six-plus innings.

De Aza, who was called up from Triple-A Charlotte prior to the game, belted a two-run homer in his first major-league at-bat of the season.

Sergio Santos recorded the game's final out to notch his 21st save of the season, as the White Sox won for the fourth time in five games. They trail the first-place Tigers by 3 1/2 games in the AL Central.

Max Scherzer (11-6) was the hard-luck loser, allowing two runs on six hits and four walks while fanning eight over six frames.

Austin Jackson had a homer to account for the Tigers' lone run.

In the second, De Aza's first career home run spotted the White Sox a 2-0 lead, as he followed an Alexi Ramirez walk with a shot to right.

"I think this kid has a lot of speed. He plays good defense," White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen said of De Aza. "He can do a lot of things to help you win games."

The Tigers would not get on the board until the seventh, when Jackson hit a leadoff homer, effectively chasing Danks from the game.

Previously, Danks worked out of several jams to keep the Tigers off the board.

Singles by Carlos Guillen, Alex Avila and Jackson loaded the bases with one out in the third, but Danks put Ryan Raburn down on strikes and got Magglio Ordonez to ground into a force out at second.

An inning later, Danks issued to walks to begin the frame before striking out the side.

In the fifth, the Tigers placed runners on first and second with one out, but Ordonez went down swinging and Miguel Cabrera was retired on a sharp line drive to center.

"After the third inning he was fighting through it, but this kid went out there and he pitched with his heart," said Guillen of Danks.

Game Notes

Prior to the game the White Sox traded Edwin Jackson and Mark Teahen to the Toronto Blue Jays for pitchers Jason Frasor and Zach Stewart...Danks was on the disabled list from June 25-July 20 with a strained right oblique. He is 4-0 and has allowed just four earned runs over his last six starts.
