The 25-year-old has won six of seven decisions in nine starts in 2011 at home, including a 4-2 defeat of Arizona on July 10 in which he gave up two runs on seven hits in six innings.
Garcia traveled to Pittsburgh to defeat the Pirates in his most recent start on July 23 and allowed just a run on eight hits in 7 1/3 innings of a 9-1 victory.
He's 0-2 in three career starts against Houston with a 5.87 earned run average.
The Cardinals enter the final with a half-game deficit in the National League's Central Division, where they trail first-place Milwaukee and are a game ahead of the Pirates.
On Wednesday, Jose Altuve knocked in the go-ahead run in the ninth inning to help the Astros snap a five-game losing streak with a 4-2 victory over the Cardinals.
Altuve finished with three hits, as did Jason Bourgeois, while Clint Barmes belted a two-run homer for Houston, which got six quality innings out of Bud Norris.
Fernando Rodriguez (2-0) threw two scoreless innings of relief behind Norris to earn the win, and Mark Melancon struck out Albert Pujols with runners on second and third to end the game.
Jon Jay and Yadier Molina each knocked in a run for the Cardinals, who had won five of six coming in.
St. Louis' Chris Carpenter gave up two runs on eight hits before getting pulled for Mitchell Boggs to start the eighth.
Boggs (0-3) got pinch-hitter Hunter Pence to hit into a double play with the bases loaded to end the eighth, but ran into more problems in the ninth.
St. Louis added to its rotation prior to the game, getting starter Edwin Jackson in a multi-player deal with the Blue Jays that also sent outfielder Colby Rasmus to Toronto.
St. Louis also got outfielder Corey Patterson and pitchers Marc Rzepczynski and Octavio Dotel from Toronto. The Blue Jays, in turn, received pitchers P.J. Walters, Brian Tallet and Trever Miller in addition to Rasmus.
Houston starts lefty Wandy Rodriguez, who'll be meeting St. Louis for the 20th time in his big-league career. The 32-year-old Dominican is 5-11 in those appearances, including 18 starts, while posting a 4.02 ERA in 105 1/3 innings.
He in winless in his last four starts overall, losing three decisions while combining to allow 24 hits and 16 runs in 24 innings.
Rodriguez's last win came June 30 against Texas, as he threw seven scoreless innings and gave up four hits in a 7-0 victory.
