Padres edge D-Backs to avoid sweep

San Diego, CA (Sports Network) - Jesus Guzman hit a home run, drove in a pair and crossed the plate twice, as the San Diego Padres downed the Arizona Diamondbacks, 4-3, to avoid a three-game sweep.

Luis Martinez went 2-for-4 and drove in the go-ahead run in the sixth.

Luke Gregerson (3-3) entered with the bases loaded a half-inning earlier and retired the last two batters to pick up the win, while Heath Bell faced the minimum in the ninth to record his 30th save of the season.

Daniel Hudson (10-7) surrendered four runs on seven hits while fanning six in as many frames to suffer the loss.

Brandon Allen belted a two-run homer and finished with three RBI, but the Diamondbacks failed to win their fifth straight.

In the second, Allen followed a Chris Young single with a homer to left-center to give Arizona an early 2-0 lead.

Guzman answered in the home half, ripping a solo shot over the fence in left.

In the fourth, Guzman evened things up with an RBI single, which got past the diving Cody Ransom at short. Cameron Maybin, who reached with a leadoff single and advanced to second on a Chase Headley groundout, scored on the play.

The Diamondbacks grabbed the lead in the top of the sixth as walks by Justin Upton and Chris Young and a single by Miguel Montero loaded the bases with one down before Mat Latos walked Allen to push Upton across.

Gregerson relived Latos and retired Ransom and Ryan Roberts to limit the damage.

Guzman reached with a two-out walk in the bottom half, stole second and tied the game on Orlando Hudson's single up the middle. After Kyle Blanks was hit by a pitch, Martinez singled to the left side to score Hudson and put the Padres on top for good.

"Stupid two-out walk," said Hudson. "It's unacceptable. I do it all the time. I get two quick outs and then for some reason I can't find the zone for the third guy."

Josh Spence carried the momentum into the next half-inning, striking out the side to maintain the lead.

"Guzman gave us a nice lift with the homer and then had some good at bats along the way," said Padres manager Bud Black. "All around, a good game for Guzman."

Game Notes

The Padres had lost five of their previous six games...Latos lasted 5 1/3 innings, allowing three runs and striking out seven...Upton has hit safely in nine straight games...Bell has now recorded at least 30 saves in three consecutive seasons.
