Tigers aim for another rout of Angels

Jul 30, 2011 - 2:39 PM (Sports Network) - Fresh off a lopsided affair on Friday, the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim and the Detroit Tigers will clash today in the third of four straight weekend contests at Comerica Park.

After losing a shootout in Thursday's opener, the Tigers dominated the Angels to the tune of 12-2 last night. Victor Martinez and Carlos Guillen knocked in four runs apiece to pace Detroit's offense.

Brennan Boesch went 2-for-3 with a solo homer and two runs scored for the Tigers, who bounced back from a 12-7 loss in the opener thanks to a lot of runs and an excellent outing from Rick Porcello.

Porcello (11-6) tossed eight strong innings to finish off the month of July with a 5-0 record. He gave up two runs on five hits en route to winning his fifth straight start.

The right-hander also struck out six and walked zero. The 22-year-old Porcello last recorded five straight victorious starts as a freshman hurler from May 5-27, 2009.

"It might be the best game I've seen him pitch since he's been in the big leagues," said Tigers manager Jim Leyland of Porcello. "I thought he was tremendous against a team that just bashed the ball around [Thursday]."

Detroit had 15 hits, compared to five for the Angels.

Maicer Izturis hit a solo homer for the Angels, who saw a three-game winning streak come to an end.

Tyler Chatwood (6-7) allowed six runs on eight hits over 5 1/3 innings to suffer the loss.

Veteran righty Dan Haren will get the ball for the Angels this afternoon in hopes of improving his already strong 10-6 record and 3.01 ERA. Haren has already pitched 152 2/3 innings and has racked up 130 strikeouts while issuing a mere 23 walks. On Monday, Haren allowed just one earned run on three hits in 7 2/3 innings against Cleveland.

Haren threw a shutout against Detroit earlier this season, yielding a mere two hits in the affair. He is 3-4 lifetime versus the Tigers with a 4.12 ERA.

Duane Below, a 25-year-old rookie, is set to make his third start for Detroit and is still in search of his first MLB win. He took the mound on Monday and was roughed up a bit by the White Sox, allowing four earned runs on six hits in 4 2/3 innings.

This game represents Below's first career appearance against the Angels.

Despite yesterday's loss, the Angels have won five of the last eight meetings in this series.
