Aces Wild: Weaver, Verlander face off in Detroit
Jul 31, 2011 - 2:45 PM (Sports Network) - The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim and Detroit Tigers close out their four-game series with a tremendous pitching matchup this afternoon at Comerica Park, as Jered Weaver squares off against Justin Verlander.Weaver is fresh off a stellar performance against the Indians on Tuesday, as he allowed just one earned run on five hits in seven innings. As impressive as the star righty?s 14-4 record is, his 1.79 ERA is the best in all of baseball.
Weaver has yet to face the Tigers this season and is 3-3 lifetime versus Detroit with a 5.68 ERA.
One of the truly elite hurlers in all of baseball, Verlander is 14-5 with a 2.34 ERA. He beat the White Sox on Tuesday despite being touched up for four earned runs in eight innings. Having already logged 173 innings, the flame- throwing righty has 169 strikeouts to his credit and has surrendered a mere 120 hits.
Verlander is 3-4 in his career versus the Angels with a 4.13 ERA.
On Saturday, Dan Haren tossed his third complete game of the season to lead the Angels past the Tigers, 5-1. Erick Aybar went 3-for-5 with a double and two runs scored as the Angels won for the eighth time in their last 11 games.
Haren (11-6) allowed one run on six hits and a walk while striking out just one batter.
Jacob Turner (0-1) made his major league debut, allowing two runs on three hits and three walks while striking out six through 5 1/3 innings for the loss.
"I definitely had jitters in the first inning, but that's to be expected. Ultimately, it went pretty well," Turner said about his debut. "It was an awesome experience."
Magglio Ordonez knocked in Detroit's lone run as the team fell for the fifth time in the past eight games.
Despite yesterday?s defeat, Detroit continues to lead the AL Central by 1 ? games over Cleveland, while the Angels are just two games back of Texas in the West.
