Nats continue series with Braves in DC
Aug 2, 2011 - 3:03 PM (Sports Network) - Steady lefty John Lannan can make it four straight wins for Washington tonight when the streaking Nationals play the visiting Atlanta Braves in game two of a three-game series tonight at Nationals Park.Washington broke out on top of the matchup on Monday, when Rick Ankiel smacked two home runs in a 5-3 win.
Livan Hernandez (6-10) threw six strong innings, allowing one run on six hits and no walks while striking out three in his first win since June 26.
Drew Storen worked his way out of trouble in the ninth to earn his 27th save of the year.
Atlanta's Michael Bourn, traded from the Astros to the Braves on Sunday, led off the first game with his new club with a single. But the center fielder did not record another hit and ended 1-for-4 at the plate.
Dan Uggla went deep twice as the Braves lost for the third time in five games and sit seven games behind Philadelphia for the NL East lead.
Jair Jurrjens (12-4) allowed five runs on seven hits and two walks through five-plus innings to take his first loss since June 14.
Lannan, a 27-year-old from New York, has won seven of 11 career decisions in 13 starts against Atlanta while posting a 3.24 earned run average across 77 2/3 innings.
He beat the Braves, 5-2, in their last meeting on July 16 in Atlanta, scattering five hits and allowing two runs in 5 2/3 innings.
He defeated Los Angeles, 7-2, six days latter in California, then dropped a 5-2 verdict to Florida in his most recent start at home on July 28.
The Nationals are 13-9 in Lannan's 22 starts in 2011.
Atlanta starts 38-year-old righty Derek Lowe, who seeks his first win since July 18.
The former Boston Red Sox ace and closer improved to 6-7 on the season with a July 18 win in Colorado, but has dropped two straight since while allowing 14 hits and seven runs in 10 innings.
He is 9-7 with three saves in 25 career meetings with the Nationals.
Atlanta is 12-11 in games Lowe has pitched this season.
The Braves and Nationals have split 10 meetings this season.
