Arizona pulled into a tie with the defending World Series champions on Tuesday, as Justin Upton belted a two-run homer and made a nifty catch in right field, helping the D'Backs to a 6-1 win.
Paul Goldschmidt hit the go-ahead two-run homer, the first of his major league career, as Arizona won its fourth in a row. It has captured eight of its last 10 games and moved into the lead in the division for the first time since June 24.
"To come up here in this environment and do what he's done is a huge lift for us," Arizona manager Kirk Gibson said of Goldschmidt, who had 30 homers and 94 RBIs in 103 games in the minors. "He's become part of our team. You have to be awed by it. He's shown great character by the way he?s controlled his emotions."
Daniel Hudson threw eight solid innings to snap a personal two-game skid. Hudson (11-7) allowed six hits, walked a batter and fanned five.
"It's a lot of fun but we all know we still got a long way to go," Hudson said. "Our ultimate goal is to get into October and you've got to come through San Francisco to get there."
The Giants held the advantage in the NL West each day since, but on Tuesday they matched a season-high with their fifth straight loss.
Tim Lincecum (9-9) fanned eight batters over seven innings, but couldn't get in the win column despite allowing just three hits.
"We're trying to play good ball. We know in the position that we're at that to maintain that lead in the West we've just got to manufacture runs and pitch better than we have been," Lincecum said. "Those are simple things and it's just a matter of playing ball like we did before so it's not a big adjustment for us, it's just playing baseball the right way."
Marquis had lost three of his last four starts with the Nationals before being dealt late Saturday night for minor league infielder Zachary Walters. He lost his most recent start on July 24 to the Los Angeles Dodgers, allowing three runs and five hits in six innings. Despite the recent rough patch he is still 8-5 with a 3.95 ERA.
The veteran righty beat the Giants with a five-hit shutout earlier in the year and is 5-3 lifetime against them with a 2.476 ERA in 12 games, 11 of which have been starts.
San Francisco, meanwhile, will counter with All-Star right-hander Ryan Vogelsong, who is 8-1 with a 2.23 ERA. Vogelsong did not get a decision against the Cincinnati Reds on Friday, as he gave up three runs and seven hits in six innings of a 4-3 loss.
He is 1-1 in eight games (two starts) against Arizona with a 2.81 ERA.
Despite losing the first two games of this set San Francisco has had Arizona's number this season, prevailing in seven of the 11 matchups. The Giants also won last season's series with the D'Backs, 13-5.
With a win today, though, the Diamondbacks will have their first sweep at San Francisco since July 25-27, 2008.
