Nats pay a visit to Coors

Aug 4, 2011 - 2:53 PM (Sports Network) - Ross Detwiler makes the seventh start of his fourth big- league season tonight when the Washington Nationals travel to Coors Field to open a four-game weekend series with the Colorado Rockies.

The Nationals traveled west after winning two of three at home against Atlanta, though they dropped the finale of the series when Dan Uggla finished 2-for-4 with a three-run homer to help the Braves record a 6-4 win.

Jayson Werth clubbed a two-run homer and Michael Morse added an RBI single for the Nationals, who had their four-game winning streak stopped.

Chien-Ming Wang (0-2), who made only his second major league start since the 2009 season, lasted five innings in defeat, giving up six runs -- two earned -- on seven hits. He walked one and did not strike out a batter.

Detwiler, the sixth overall choice in the 2007 draft, debuted in the majors with a single one-inning relief appearance in his draft year, then won one of 15 appearances in 2009 and one of eight a year later in 2010.

He began his 2011 season with Washington on July 5 with a 3-2 defeat of the Cubs, but has pitched exclusively in relief for five subsequent appearances while allowing a combined nine hits and two earned runs in 10 innings.

He's allowed zero runs in four of those five bullpen trips, and recorded a hold against the New York Mets on July 30 after giving up a single hit in 1 1/3 innings of a 3-0 Nationals victory.

Detwiler pitched two scoreless innings against the Rockies on July 9 and has allowed nine hits and six runs against them in two career outings and six innings of work.

Colorado goes with righty Esmil Rogers, who looks for a fifth win in six 2011 decisions.

The 25-year-old Dominican got a no-decision in one big-league start in 2009 and was 2-3 across 28 outings in 2010 before returning to the majors in April of this year.

He won three of four decisions across five appearances between April 7 and May 1, then returned to allow a combined five hits and four runs in six innings against the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego on July 25 and 30.

He's 0-1 in two appearances at Coors Field this season and has never faced the Nationals.

On Wednesday in Denver, Ryan Howard homered and knocked in four runs as the Philadelphia Phillies took down the Rockies, 8-6, to sweep a three-game series.

Todd Helton had two hits, including a solo homer, and three RBI and Dexter Fowler tripled and scored three times as the Rockies dropped their fourth straight.

Jason Hammel (6-11) lasted five innings after he surrendered six runs on eight hits.

Colorado has won two of three from the Nats this season.
