Diamondbacks return home to take on Dodgers
Aug 5, 2011 - 2:46 PM (Sports Network) - The Arizona Diamondbacks are coming off a successful road trip and hope to carry that momentum into tonight's opener of a three-game series versus the NL West-rival Los Angeles Dodgers at Chase Field.Arizona will begin a 10-game residency Friday versus the Dodgers, Astros and Mets, and went 6-3 on a nine-game trek through San Diego, Los Angeles and San Francisco. It was aiming for a three-game sweep of the NL West-leading Giants until dropping an 8-1 decision Wednesday.
Jason Marquis made his Diamondbacks debut and didn't impress his teammates, allowing eight runs -- seven earned -- and 10 hits in four innings to absorb the loss.
"They came out of the box swinging, they were able to find some holes and I wasn't able to stop the bleeding early on," Marquis said. "So I have to do a better job of making quality pitches early in the count. To come in here -- I don't want to use the word impression -- but you want to come out here and contribute to a team that's on the verge of making the playoffs. To not do that today, I'm a little frustrated."
Justin Upton went 0-for-3 to halt his hitting streak at 14 games and Collin Cowgill posted a team-best two hits for the Diamondbacks, who are a half-game behind the Giants for the NL West lead and entered the series finale having won four straight and eight of 10 games.
Rookie Josh Collmenter will toe the rubber for Arizona tonight and hopes to get himself and the club back into the win column. Collmenter is 6-6 with a 3.10 earned run average in 21 games (14 starts) this season and had a personal two-start winning streak come to an end in last Friday's 9-5 loss at LA. He allowed five runs and seven hits over 3 2/3 innings.
The righty is 1-1 with a 4.66 ERA in two starts against the Dodgers and 5-2 in 10 games (6 starts) at home.
Los Angeles failed in its bid for a three-game sweep of the San Diego Padres with Wednesday's 3-0 loss. Ted Lilly pitched well enough for the win, but was saddled with the loss for surrendering just one run and four hits in six innings with seven strikeouts and one walk.
"We've played this game before," Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said on the club's website. "This was kind of one of our games. Last night [a 1-0 win] was one of our games. It's the same thing, we're fighting for runs. We get a few chances and don't take advantage and we struggle for runs."
Tony Gwynn Jr. finished with a team-high two hits for the Dodgers, who are 11 games off the pace in the National League West and have lost four of their previous seven contests.
Toeing the rubber for the visiting Dodgers tonight will be Chad Billingsley. He has alternated wins and losses over his last six starts and was saddled with the loss in Saturday's 6-4 defeat at the hands of Arizona. The D'Backs reached him for six runs and seven hits in 5 2/3 frames, sending Billingsley to the loss column for the ninth time this season (9-9).
Billingsley will make his 23rd start of the season tonight and hopes to lower his lofty 4.15 ERA. He is 4-5 in 11 road starts in 2011 and 9-7 with a 3.53 ERA in 23 career games (21 starts) against the Diamondbacks.
LA's pitching staff entered the series finale against San Diego with a NL-best 2.82 earned run average over the past 21 games, amassing a league-high 196 strikeouts. The Dodgers are 13-9 since July 7 and nine games into a stretch of 12 straight against NL West foes.
Arizona has won six of nine meetings with the Dodgers this season, but LA went 13-5 in last year's season series.
