Angels nip Mariners in extras, 1-0

Aug 6, 2011 - 5:51 AM Anaheim, CA (Sports Network) - Vernon Wells singled in Torii Hunter in the 10th inning, boosting the Angels to a 1-0 win over the Seattle Mariners.

Hunter singled to left off Dan Cortes (0-1) to start the inning and went to second on a wild pitch. Wells reached for a low pitch and lofted a soft liner to left-center field to give Los Angeles its seventh victory in 10 games.

"With two strikes I just tried to put a ball in play," Wells said. "Any time you get a hit to win a game it's huge."

They've also beaten the Mariners in 17 of the last 19 encounters at Angel Stadium. The Angels remained a game behind Texas for first place in the AL West.

Jered Weaver scattered seven hits and had eight strikeouts over nine innings. Jordan Walden (3-3) retired the side in order in the top of the 10th.

Ichiro Suzuki had a pair of hits for the Mariners, who had a three-game winning streak broken. They've lost five straight times to the Angels.

The highlight of the night for the Mariners came on defense from Trayvon Robinson, who was acquired Sunday from Boston in the Erik Bedard trade. Robinson started in left field in his first major league game and robbed Hunter of a home run in the third inning, reaching over the short wall in left and into the crowd.

Jeff Mathis struck out looking to leave the bases full in the bottom of the fourth. He fanned to cap the sixth, stranding two more runners in scoring position.

The Mariners had a costly base-running mistake in the eighth. With men on first and second, Robinson hit a ball to first baseman Mark Trumbo, who threw to second for the force play. The problem was Casper Wells rounded third and was thrown out trying to get back to the bag.

Mariners starter Jason Vargas scattered seven hits over six innings.

"Weaver is one of the best in the game. We made him battle," Mariners manager Eric Wedge said. "Varas was right there with him, but we made mistakes on the basepath."
