Peavy, White Sox conclude set in Minnesota
Aug 7, 2011 - 2:59 PMVideo
Since defeating Washington back on June 25th, the crafty veteran has gone winless in his last six starts. The most recent start for Peavy came against the Yankees, and even though the right-hander was defeated, he still put forth a respectable showing. In seven innings, Peavy held the Bronx Bombers to just three runs on eight hits, and also struck out four batters.
Earlier this season the former Cy Young Award winner was overpowered by the Twins, as they knocked around the right-hander for five runs on 10 hits in less than five innings of work. It was the third start for Peavy against Minnesota and in those matchups the veteran has accumulated a weak 4.76 earned run average.
The Twins will hand the ball to Brian Duensing, who has lost two of his last three matchups. The most recent setback for the left-hander came against the Angels, and it was a forgettable performance, as he surrendered five runs on eight hits in six innings.
Now the veteran hurler will have a home crowd behind him, however, pitching at target Field has not brought Duensing success. In fact, on the year he is just 5-4 with a weak 5.28 earned run average.
Throughout his career Duensing has enjoyed plenty of success against Chicago, posting a 4-0 mark with a 2.51 earned run average. One of those strong efforts came this season, as Duensing held the Pale Hoes to just two runs in seven innings of action.
Last night, Zach Stewart tossed 6 1/3 innings of one-run ball to record his first major league victory, leading the White Sox to a 6-1 win over the Twins.
Stewart (1-1), in his fourth career start, scattered eight hits and fanned two while walking one. It was his first start for the White Sox since coming over in a trade from the Toronto Blue Jays.
Brent Lillibridge smacked a two-run homer and Paul Konerko collected a pair of RBI. Alex Rios chipped in three hits for the White Sox, who have taken the first two games of this series after dropping six in a row.
Danny Valencia knocked in the only run for the Twins with a single. Michael Cuddyer, who started the game at second base, added a pair of doubles in a losing effort.
Carl Pavano (6-9) gave up two runs -- one earned -- on nine hits while striking out five and walking one for the Twins, who have lost three in a row and six of seven.
