White Sox, Orioles resume set at Camden Yards

Aug 9, 2011 - 2:50 PM (Sports Network) - The Chicago White Sox take aim at a season-high fifth straight win this evening when they continue a four-game series with the Baltimore Orioles at Camden Yards.

The White Sox opened this set with a win on Monday, as Alex Rios' eighth- inning RBI single pushed Chicago to a 7-6 triumph.

A.J. Pierzynski, who finished 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBI, tied the game with a sac fly earlier in the eighth. Carlos Quentin went 2-for-4 and scored a pair of runs and Gordon Beckham added a two-run homer for the White Sox, whose winning streak comes on the heels of a six-game slide.

The Orioles grabbed the lead in the seventh courtesy of a J.J. Hardy three- run blast. Hardy, who missed the Orioles' previous three games with a sore ankle, went 3-for-5 with two doubles and four RBI. Matt Wieters also had two doubles and finished 3-for-3 with two runs scored.

Jesse Crain (6-3) earned the win despite surrendering the home run to Hardy. Sergio Santos struck out the side in the ninth to record his 23rd save of the season.

Jim Johnson (5-4) gave up the tying and go-ahead runs to suffer the loss, Baltimore's fifth in six games.

Hoping to add to their misery tonight will be righty Gavin Floyd, who had a three-start winning streak stopped with an awful outing his last time out. The New York Yankees banged Floyd around for 10 runs and nine hits in just 2 1/3 innings on Wednesday, dropping him to 9-10 on the year, while ballooning his ERA to 4.56.

He had posted an 0.81 ERA in his three previous starts.

"It's tough to swallow when you get beat up like that," said Floyd. "But you know I've done it too many times to doubt anything. I still have faith that God has a plan. Nothing is going to really [change] that."

Floyd gave up six runs in six innings in a loss to the O's back on May 1, but is 3-2 lifetime against them with a 3.48 ERA in six starts.

Baltimore, meanwhile, will rely on lefty Jo-Jo Reyes, who will be making his first start with the Orioles after being claimed off waivers from Toronto. Reyes had been 5-8 with a 5.40 ERA in 20 starts with the Blue Jays.

"I know he's looking forward to the opportunity," said Orioles manager Buck Showalter. "And looking at some of his stuff, you can see why he's had some challenges. You can see why he's been well thought of in some regards, too. ... We've got other options available. We'd like to see him, get our arms around what he could bring, comparatively speaking. He's here, he's obviously thrown multiple innings this year."

Reyes, the 11th different starting pitcher used by Baltimore this season, has never faced the White Sox.

Baltimore has won three of its four meetings with the White Sox this season.
