Lee solid on mound, at the plate as Phils clip Dodgers
Aug 10, 2011 - 6:24 AM Los Angeles, CA (Sports Network) - Cliff Lee put the Phillies on his back and carried them past the Dodgers, 2-1, as the left-hander tossed eight scoreless innings and added a solo home run in the victory.Lee (12-7) held Los Angeles to four hits, walked two and fanned 10, his eighth double-digit strikeout effort of the season.
The only extra-base hit for the visitors other than Lee's second career home run -- a no-doubter to right in the seventh -- was Jimmy Rollins' RBI double in the third.
Ted Lilly (7-12) was charged with the loss despite eight quality innings that saw him allow two runs on six hits.
"Ted threw really well tonight. When you face anyone on their staff, you have your hands full," Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said.
Philadelphia has won 11 of 12, while LA has dropped three straight.
Half of the hits Lee allowed came on back-to-back singles to start the home first. The next two batters went down swinging, and Aaron Miles fouled out to end the threat, the start of 12 consecutive Dodgers retired.
Rollins staked Lee to a 1-0 lead with a line drive to right to score Wilson Valdez, who led off the third with a single and was sacrificed into scoring position by Lee.
Lee took a big swing in the seventh and knew immediately he got all of Lilly's offering, flipping his bat as the ball sailed well over the wall in right.
"I never thought that would happen. I got a 2-0 pitch out and over the plate, and when I made contact I was pretty sure it was gone," said Lee.
A pitch count of 124 after eight innings spoiled Lee's chance at a second consecutive shutout.
Ryan Madson entered in the ninth and gave up a leadoff single to Andre Ethier. Madson retired the next two hitters before Casey Blake singled to left, the Dodgers' only hit in seven opportunities with runners in scoring position.
That was as close as it got, as Madson struck out Rod Barajas swinging to lock up his 21st save of the season.
Game Notes
