Upton, D-Backs rally from six down to beat Astros

Aug 10, 2011 - 6:33 AM Phoenix, AZ (Sports Network) - Justin Upton knocked in four runs and Miguel Montero brought in three more as the Arizona Diamondbacks came back from a six-run deficit to take an 11-9 victory over the Houston Astros in the second installment of a four-game series.

With the win, the Diamondbacks remain a half-game back of the San Francisco Giants in the National League West.

Micah Owings (6-0) allowed one run in three innings of relief to earn the win. Jason Marquis allowed seven runs -- four earned -- on nine hits and two walks in his second start with his new club. He has now allowed 15 runs -- 11 earned -- in two outings with Arizona.

"Obviously things didn't turn out the way I wanted it to," Marquis said. "But the team battled, got a big win, picked me up. I just have to do a better job of putting hitters away when I control the count."

J.J. Putz allowed a run in the ninth, but closed the door to earn his 27th save of the year and give the D-Backs their second win in three games.

Wilton Lopez (2-5) took the loss after starter Jordan Lyles squandered a 7-1 lead. Lyles went five-plus innings, allowing seven runs on 12 hits.

Brian Bogusevic had three hits, including his first career home run, three RBI and two runs scored as the Astros lost for the fourth time in their last five contests.

Houston squandered a bases loaded opportunity in the eighth, but they had another chance to take the lead against Putz in the ninth. Jimmy Paredes and Humberto Quintero had back-to-back, one-out base hits before Clint Barmes smacked a ground rule double over the left-field wall to score Paredes and put the tying runs in scoring position.

But pinch-hitter Matt Downs fanned on a 94 m.p.h. fastball and Putz made a diving grab of a slow roller to the right of the mound by Jose Altuve to end the threat, and the game.

Arizona took the early lead in the first on Montero's RBI double, but Houston tied the game in the second with a run-scoring single by Quintero.

The Astros then jumped out to a big lead with two consecutive three-run innings. J.D. Martinez blasted a solo home run with one out in the third and after a Carlos Lee walk, Bogusevic hammered a ball over the left-center field fence.

With men on second and third in the fourth, Lee's base hit brought in Altuve and Martinez. Bogusevic followed with a double, plating Lee and making it a 7-1 contest.

The D-Backs did not go quietly, though, as they fought back in the fifth. Three straight singles to start the frame by Gerardo Parra, Owings and Willie Bloomquist loaded the bases. After a Ryan Roberts pop out, Upton doubled off the left-field wall to score Parra and Owings. Montero came up next and hit a two-run single into right field to bring Arizona within two.

A Paul Goldschmidt single and a Parra double in the sixth put runners on second and third and knocked Lyles out of the game. Lopez came on next and got one out before Bloomquist hit a ball right back up the middle to bring both runners home. Two batters later, Upton blasted a homer to put Arizona ahead 9-7.

In the seventh inning, Paredes joined Bogusevic by hitting his first career home run with a solo shot that brought the Astros within one.

RBI doubles by Roberts and Kelly Johnson in the eighth inning made it an 11-8 game.
