Phillies wait out rain, defeat D-Backs

Aug 19, 2011 - 4:39 AM Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - John Mayberry smacked a two-run homer, and the Philadelphia Phillies became the first major league team this year to record 80 wins with a 4-1 triumph over the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Chase Utley and Raul Ibanez each had a pair of hits and scored once for the NL East leaders, who moved to a season-high 39 games over .500 (80-42). It is their best mark since the end of the 1977 season when they finished 40 games over the break-even mark. Additionally, it marks the franchise's second-fewest games played to reach 80 victories. They needed 121 games in 1976 to get to the mark.

David Herndon (1-2), the second pitcher for the Phillies of the night, threw three innings to get the win. He came in after a 2-hour, 17-minute rain delay in relief of Vance Worley.

Ian Kennedy (15-4) had a career-long seven-game winning streak broken, as he allowed five hits and three runs over three frames.

Paul Goldschmidt homered for a second straight night for Arizona, which lost the rubber match of this three-game set, but remained 2 1/2 games ahead of second-place San Francisco in the NL West.

Neither starter came back after the delay as Worley gave up just one hit with two strikeouts while Kennedy had four strikeouts.

"I thought my stuff was a lot better," Worley said. "I was able to locate both sides of the plate with all my pitches."

After going down in order in the first, the Phils went on top in the second when Ibanez hit a double off the wall in center and later came home on a Wilson Valdez double.

In the third, Jimmy Rollins led off with a single and Mayberry followed with a blast off the left field foul pole for his 10th home run.

At the end of the third the grounds crew pulled the tarp over the field and the game went into its lengthy delay.

After the rain passed through and the game restarted, the fourth inning went scoreless before the Phils tacked on another run in the fifth.

With Micah Owings on the mound and one out, Utley doubled and was held there when Hunter Pence grounded out. Ibanez then hit a double off the wall in left for a 4-0 lead.

Goldschmidt went deep to center leading off the eighth against Michael Stutes.

Ryan Madson retired the side in order in the ninth for his 23rd save.

"They shut us down," Arizona manager Kirk Gibson said. "We had 11 hits in three games. We put no pressure on them. We were fortunate to win one of the games. They pitched us a certain way and we didn't make adjustments we needed to make."
