Myers leads Astros into opener with Rockies

Aug 22, 2011 - 2:56 PM (Sports Network) - Brett Myers goes after his first win in 12 starts this evening when the Houston Astros open a three-game series with the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field.

Myers hasn't won since June 17 and is 0-6 in that span with a 4.69 earned run average. He didn't get a decision on Tuesday against Chicago, as he allowed four runs and six hits in seven innings of a 6-5 Astros win.

Houston is 3-8 during Myers' winless streak.

Myers could get himself untracked tonight, as he owns a perfect 7-0 record against the Rockies with a 3.47 ERA in eight games, seven of which have been starts.

The Astros were denied a sweep of the defending world champion San Francisco Giants on Sunday, as they fell 6-4 in 11 innings. Mark Melancon served up a two-run tie-breaking homer to Pablo Sandoval in the 11th, as Houston had a four-game winning streak stopped.

Colorado, meanwhile, secured a series win over the Los Angeles Dodgers with a rare triumph on Sunday, as Seth Smith's two-run home run in the seventh lifted the Rockies to a 5-3 victory.

The win came as a relief for Colorado as the team had dropped 17 straight games on a Sunday, a record for the modern era that matches the St. Louis Browns' record set June 19-October 9, 1898. The streak began after a win against Chicago on April 17 followed by a loss to Florida on April 24.

"It didn't matter to us," Smith said about the skid. "It's just good that we won. ... The streaks for [the media]."

Carlos Gonzalez added a two-run home run in the first inning for the Rockies, who have won three of their last four.

Kevin Millwood (1-1) went seven innings in his first win of the season as he was charged with three runs on seven hits. He walked one batter and recorded four strikeouts.

Tonight, Colorado will hand the ball to righty Jhoulys Chacin, who has lost his last two starts. Chacin fell to 9-10 on the year on Tuesday in Florida, as he surrendered five runs in four innings to raise his ERA to 3.59.

Chacin has faced the Astros just once and lost, allowing five runs (four earned) and four hits in six innings.

Houston won four of six from the Rockies last season.
