The series was originally slated to end Thursday evening, but was moved up a day as a precaution.
"Everybody will be on their normal day because we had a day off [Monday] and everybody had an extra day," Reds manager Dusty Baker told his club's website. "It makes it not as big of a deal. Quite frankly, it's better than waiting on this rain. As it was, we were slated to get in at 2:15 a.m. ET [Friday] with no rain delays, in reality."
Baker's club is coming off Tuesday's 8-6 win in the opener, as Yonder Alonso finished 3-for-4 with a home run and four RBI to lead the way. Jay Bruce also homered and Dave Sappelt recorded three hits, two RBI and a pair of runs scored for the Reds, who have won two straight and eight of 12 games.
Aroldis Chapman retired the final batter of the eighth for the win and Francisco Cordero threw a spotless ninth to notch his 27th save of the season and 200th in the National League. Johnny Cueto made the start and allowed three runs over five innings of work.
Cincinnati is 4-3 on a nine-game road trip and will send Homer Bailey to the mound in the first game this afternoon. He has won four of his last five decisions and did not figure into the outcome of Friday's 11-8 win at Pittsburgh, where he allowed three runs in five innings. Bailey is 7-5 with a 4.48 ERA in 15 starts this season.
The righty will face the Marlins for the fourth time in his career and is 1-1 with a 2.45 ERA over the first three starts against them.
Toeing the rubber for the Reds in the nightcap will be high-kicking right- hander Bronson Arroyo. Arroyo is only 0-4 with a 5.75 earned run average in his last nine starts, with his team going 3-6 in that stretch. He lost at Washington last Thursday in a 3-1 decision and gave up all three runs through six innings. He has lasted six innings in each of his last eight starts.
Arroyo lost to Florida on May 1 this season and is 0-3 with a 4.59 ERA in 10 career matchups (7 starts) with the Marlins.
Meanwhile, Florida has dropped six in a row and is only 2-16 in its last 18 contests. Ricky Nolasco started for the Marlins and did not record a decision, allowing four runs and nine hits in 6 2/3 frames. Nolasco also set the franchise mark for strikeouts with 765. Leo Nunez was dealt the loss for surrendering four runs in two-thirds of an inning.
Emilio Bonifacio finished 2-for-3 with a homer, three RBI and a pair of runs scored, while John Buck added two hits and two runs scored for the Marlins.
"There's no question this hurts because we had a meeting tonight and the guys played extremely well," Marlins manager Jack McKeon said. "I thought they were really alive with some energy on the bench. It looked like we had it and it went away."
The Marlins have dropped 10 of their last 11 at home and will hand Javier Vazquez the ball in the first game Wednesday. Vazquez is 7-11 with a 4.67 ERA in 25 starts and is 0-2 in his previous four outings. He lost at San Diego last Thursday and allowed three runs in six innings of a 3-1 loss. Vazquez defeated the Reds on April 29 this season and is 5-3 with a 5.13 ERA in 12 career starts against Cincinnati.
Vazquez, a right-hander, is just 3-7 in 11 starts at home in 2011.
Chris Volstad will toe the rubber for the Fish in the late game and owns a 5-10 mark in 22 starts to go along with a 5.66 ERA. He is also 0-2 in his past four starts and was beaten by the Padres in a 4-3 loss on Friday, as he gave up four runs and six hits in five innings.
Volstad hasn't fared well at home either as evidenced by his 3-6 ledger in 11 trips to the Sun Life Stadium mound. The righty is 1-1 with a 4.26 ERA in two career starts against the Reds.
Florida won two of three meetings in Cincinnati from April 29-May 1 this season after the Reds went 5-2 in the 2010 series.
