Pena powers Mariners past Indians

Aug 24, 2011 - 10:27 PM Cleveland, OH (Sports Network) - Wily Mo Pena clubbed a two-run home run and drove in four runs, as Seattle cruised past Cleveland, 9-2, in the last of a four-game series.

Pena finished 3-for-3 and scored twice, all part of a 16-hit onslaught. Kyle Seager doubled three times and posted four total hits with three runs scored and an RBI. Brendan Ryan also had a two-run triple for the Mariners, who won three of four in the series.

"He had a big day for us out there today," said Seattle manager Eric Wedge about Pena. "He's so strong. When he steps up there he can really hit the baseball and change the game."

That was more than enough for Felix Hernandez (12-11), who gave up two runs on seven hits with 10 strikeouts and two walks over six frames.

Shelley Duncan, a fill-in for Shin Soo-Choo, finished with three hits and an RBI for the Indians, who have dropped six of seven overall. Choo was a late scratch after injuring his left side during indoor batting practice prior to the game.

Josh Tomlin (12-7) was hit around to the tune of six runs on 11 hits with six strikeouts and one walk over 4 2/3 frames. Tomlin had gone at least five frames in first 37 career starts, one of only two pitchers to do so since 1919. He shares the record with former Indians pitcher and current Toronto manager John Farrell.

"I couldn't put anybody away today," said Tomlin. "That last inning I was missing with everything and when I wasn't missing they were hitting it."

After squandering a first-inning scoring chance against the Seattle ace, Cleveland capitalized on another opportunity in the third. Hernandez escaped a bases-loaded jam in the first then found more trouble and nearly injured himself in the third.

The hurler landed on his chest and planted his face into the ground after trying to corral Ezequiel Carrera's slow roller to the left of Hernandez. He then stole second, but looked like he would be left there until Duncan sliced a line drive up the middle that graved off the end of second baseman Dustin Ackley's glove for a run-scoring single.

Seattle jumped ahead in the fourth as Seager doubled to right then Pena drove a low pitch to dead center field, comfortably clearing the wall for a 2-1 lead.

Again, the Indians connected off Hernandez in the home half, as Lonnie Chisenhall doubled to right and scored on Jack Hannahan's single that just scooted back through the middle.

Seattle blew the game open in the fifth, tacking on four runs and pushing Tomlin to the showers. Ryan and Ackley started the frame with consecutive singles, and Ryan moved to third one batter later on a wild pitch. Miguel Olivo's two-out single scored Ryan and Seager's third double of the game, a ground-rule two-bagger to right, allowed Ackley to score. Pena's double scored the other two runners for a 6-2 game.

A three-spot in the top of the seventh only increased the margin. Seager walked with one out and trotted to second on Pena's single. Trayvon Robinson also worked a free pass to load the bases, and Seager scored when Suzuki grounded into a force out. Ryan then nearly painted the right-field line, driving in the other two runners with his third triple of the season.
