Kemp, Dodgers go at it again with Rockies
Aug 27, 2011 - 3:14 PM (Sports Network) - Fresh off reaching a milestone last night, Matt Kemp hopes to continue his hot hitting this afternoon when the Dodgers continue a three- game series versus Colorado.James Loney and Kemp cracked back-to-back home runs to cap a six-run seventh inning, sending Los Angeles to a 6-1 victory on Friday.
Kemp's home run gives him 30 on the season to go with 33 stolen bases. He's just the second Dodger to reach the 30/30 mark, joining Raul Mondesi in 1997 and 1999.
"30/30 is really special with my family here," Kemp said. "We're playing really good baseball right now. We still think we can get back in this thing."
Despite the win, Kemp's playoff talk seems a longshot at this point. The Dodgers are 11 games behind first-place Arizona in the NL West.
Kemp, who has played 334 straight games, the longest streak in the majors, went 2-for-4 last night and has multiple hits in five of his last six contests.
Chad Billingsley hasn't won in his last three starts, and facing the Rockies this season hasn't been good either for the right-hander. Billingsley, this afternoon's starter, is 3-7 with a 5.33 ERA in 15 career games (13 starts) against the Rockies. That includes a 1-3 record with a 6.45 ERA in four starts against Colorado this season.
Billingsley has gone at least seven frames in each of his last two starts, but hasn't received much run support. In fact, he threw 7 2/3 innings last Sunday at Coors Field in a 5-3 loss.
Kevin Millwood was the winning pitcher in that game and he'll be on the mound Saturday for Colorado. The veteran righty, who went seven innings that day, is 6-3 lifetime against the Dodgers.
Justin Sellers added a two-run single, while Andre Ethier and Rod Barajas chipped in a hit apiece for Los Angeles, which has won four straight.
Ted Lilly (8-13) picked up the win after his offense bailed him out in the seventh. He gave up one run on three hits while fanning five and walking one over seven frames.
Carlos Gonzalez accounted for the lone Rockies run with a home run and Troy Tulowitzki added a double. Colorado had its five-game winning streak snapped.
Esmil Rogers (6-3) was tagged with the loss after giving up four runs on six hits while fanning seven and walking three over 6 2/3 innings.
The season series is even after 16 games, but the Dodgers are 5-2 at home.
