Danks tosses shutout, White Sox down Mariners

Aug 28, 2011 - 5:28 AM Seattle, WA (Sports Network) - John Danks continued his amazing turnaround on Saturday.

The left-hander matched his career-high with 10 strikeouts in a shutout as the Chicago White Sox stymied the Seattle Mariners, 3-0, in the middle installment of a three-game series at Safeco Field.

Danks (6-9), who scattered three hits and walked one, has won six of his last seven decisions after beginning the 2011 season 0-8.

"I felt real good, just trying to be aggressive, throw strikes," said Danks. "It was a bigger zone, which obviously we like. It was a fun night. I'm not worried about my personal numbers, I gave up on those the first two months."

Chicago has won four of six and remains seven games behind the Detroit Tigers in the American League Central.

Michael Pineda (9-8) was the hard-luck loser for Seattle after allowing two runs on three his with one walk and eight strikeouts through six frames.

The White Sox strung together three consecutive singles by Juan Pierre, Alejandro De Aza and Paul Konerko to produce the game's first run and put men on the corners in the fourth inning. A sacrifice fly to center field by Alexei Ramirez made it 2-0.

Seattle threatened in the sixth -- the lone frame in which they had two base runners -- when Ichiro Suzuki singled after Brendan Ryan drew a one-out walk. Danks struck out Franklin Gutierrez looking before Dustin Ackley flied out in foul territory to end the inning.

The White Sox got a home run from De Aza in the eighth.

"Danks was real good today. He had a good tempo going, he had good stuff, spotted his fastball as good as any left-handed starting pitcher we've seen," said Mariners manager Eric Wedge of the opposing hurler. "(He) was cutting the ball, good arm action on his changeup, tip your cap to that kid today, he really threw a good ballgame."

Game Notes

The shutout was the second of Danks' career. He improved to 6-0 in his last seven starts against the Mariners...The White Sox have won four straight in Seattle, their longest streak since an eight-game run from May 12, 1993- June 26, 1994...Before the game, the White Sox placed outfielder Carlos Quentin on the 15-day disabled list (retroactive to August 21) with a sprained AC joint in his left shoulder and recalled infielder/outfielder Dayan Viciedo from Triple-A Charlotte.
