Giants shoot for series win versus Astros
Aug 28, 2011 - 2:44 PMVideo
San Francisco won in thrilling fashion on Saturday, as Jeff Keppinger singled home Mark DeRosa with two outs in the bottom of the 10th inning to lift the Giants to a 2-1 win.
DeRosa singled with one out against Fernando Rodriguez (2-3) and swiped second for his first stolen base since 2009. Two batters later, Keppinger lined a 94 mph fastball into shallow right field and DeRosa beat Brian Bogusevic's throw for the winning run.
"I guess I tip my hat to him," Rodriguez said of Keppinger. "He's just one of those guys that you gotta battle and hope he's the one that makes a mistake."
The Giants have won the last two games of this by a 2-1 count after dropping the opener. They remained three games behind Arizona in the NL West after the division-leading Diamondbacks beat San Diego.
Carlos Lee had three hits in the loss for the Astros, who have lost six of seven.
Getting the call for the Giants today will be righty Matt Cain, who is 10-9 with a 2.90 earned run average. Cain did not get a decision on Tuesday against San Diego, but was not sharp, as he allowed five runs (three earned) and six hits in seven innings. He also allowed his first home run since June 14 in the 7-5 loss.
Cain has faced the Astros six times (five starts) and is 1-3 with a 5.29 ERA against them.
Houston, meanwhile, will counter with righty Bud Norris, who is 6-8 with a 3.73 ERA. Norris didn't factor in the decision of his team's 8-6 loss to Colorado on Tuesday, as he surrendered five runs (four earned) and six hits in five innings.
This will be Norris' first-ever appearance against the Giants.
Houston took two of three from the Giants last weekend and has won five of the past eight meetings with San Francisco.
