Greinke, Brewers craft another home victory, sweep Cubs

Aug 28, 2011 - 10:33 PM Milwaukee, WI (Sports Network) - Zack Greinke allowed one run in 7 2/3 innings and Corey Hart belted a two-run homer, lifting the NL Central-leading Brewers over the Cubs, 3-2, to complete a three-game sweep.

Greinke (13-5) was effective just six days after tying a season-high by allowing seven earned runs in a loss at Pittsburgh. He held Chicago to four hits, struck out seven and walked two while adding a single and a steal before scoring on Hart's blast to left field in the fifth.

"The fastball command was pretty good, and so were the changeup and slider," Greinke said. "They just put the ball in play and we made some nice plays."

John Axford yielded a one-out, solo homer to Tyler Colvin in the ninth, then put the tying run in scoring position before holding on for his 40th save and the Brewers' 50th home win.

Milwaukee improved to 21-5 in August, tying the franchise mark for most wins in a single month. The club can break the mark originally set in June of 1978 with a win in Tuesday's opener of a three-game set against the Cardinals.

Casey Coleman (2-7) was touched for three runs on six hits over seven innings for Chicago, which has dropped four straight and seven of eight overall.

"Casey threw the ball well, but he couldn't quite match Greinke pitch for pitch," said Cubs manager Mike Quade, who was ejected by home plate umpire Bill Miller for arguing balls and strikes in the first inning "He pitched a real good game against a great hitting team."

Ryan Braun went 2-for-3 with a walk and knocked in Hart with a double to right field in Milwaukee's first at-bat.

Greinke didn't give up a hit until Marlon Byrd's broken-bat single leading off the fifth, and allowed just two runners to reach past first base.

Holding a 3-0 lead following Hart's homer, Brewers manager Ron Roenicke pulled Greinke with a runner on second and two outs in the eighth and Darwin Barney greeted Francisco Rodriguez with an RBI double down the right-field line.

Rodriguez retired Aramis Ramirez to keep it a two-run game, and Axford's tenuous ninth ended with pinch-hitter Geovany Soto grounding into a game- ending fielder's choice with runners on first and second.

Milwaukee is a season-high 27 games over .500 at 81-54...Greinke is 10-0 in 12 home starts this year...Hart, who is riding an 11-game hitting streak, went 7- for-10 with two home runs, a triple, a double, three walks and six runs scored in the series...The Cubs' Ramirez and Starlin Castro both went hitless, snapping hitting streaks of 16 and 11, respectively...The Cubs have lost their last eight at Miller Park...This was Milwaukee's 13th sweep of the season, ninth at home.
