Gee pitches Mets to DH sweep of Marlins
Aug 30, 2011 - 5:46 AMVideo
New York won Monday's first game, 2-1, after R.A. Dickey pitched seven scoreless frames.
Gee (12-5) followed that effort by allowing six hits, walking two and striking out six. He gave up his only run when Greg Dobbs blasted a homer in the sixth.
But the Marlins' inability to score any more runs sent them to their ninth loss in their last 11 games.
"The pitching wasn't that bad," said Marlins manager Jack McKeon. "It kept us in the ball game. It gave us an opportunity to score. We just couldn't cash in."
David Wright went 2-for-4 with two RBI for the Mets, who have won four in a row, while shortstop Jose Reyes was 1-for-4 with a run scored in his return from the disabled list. He suffered a strained left hamstring during an August 7 game against the Braves, and was activated between Monday's games.
"This is my first game back," said Reyes. "I need to get my confidence back before I do anything crazy on the field."
New York didn't take control of the game until the final few innings. Ruben Tejada tripled and scored on an error by Dobbs in the fourth, and Dobbs got the run back in the sixth.
But in the bottom half, Tejada singled and moved to third on consecutive groundouts. Angel Pagan singled to bring him home, and crossed the plate on base hits by Nick Evans and Willie Harris.
New York chased Florida starter Ricky Nolasco (9-10) in the next inning, when Reyes singled, advanced to second on a wild pitch and crossed the plate on Wright's two-out double. The hit gave the Mets a 4-1 lead and forced Nolasco out of the game.
Mike Nickeas' RBI single in the eighth provided the Mets another insurance run.
The New York bullpen made sure Gee's effort stood for a victory -- Pedro Beato, Manny Acosta and Bobby Parnell limited the Marlins to a hit and a walk in the final three innings.
Game Notes
The Mets played their third doubleheader this season. They were swept in their first two -- April 14 against Colorado, and April 16 at Atlanta...Both teams had not played since Friday because of Hurricane Irene...Nolasco gave up four runs on nine hits during his start.
