Carmona couldn't get out of the second inning on Tuesday against the Detroit Tigers, as he allowed seven runs and eight hits in just 1 1/3 innings, dropping him to 6-14 on the year to go along with a 5.18 earned run average.
"My pitches weren't working today," Carmona said. "My sinker was flat. It stayed in the middle. I tried to pitch inside, but everything moved to the middle and was easy to hit."
After returning from the 15-day disabled list on July 18 following his recovery from a strained right quadriceps, Carmona tossed seven consecutive strong starts, compiling a 2.49 ERA over that stretch.
However, in his last three outings, spanning a total of 13 2/3 innings, Carmona has surrendered 17 runs (15 earned) and 24 hits, while posting a 9.88 ERA.
"He's had pretty much quality starts since he came off the DL," Cleveland manager Manny Acta said, "but today, he just left the ball out over the plate. That lineup that they have, you have to be on your game in order for them not to put up a bunch of runs on you."
Carmona's last win came against the White Sox back on August 17 and he is 8-5 lifetime against them with a 5.57 ERA in 16 games, 14 of which have been starts.
The Indians got back to .500 on Friday, as Lonnie Chisenhall clubbed a pair of two-run home runs to lead Cleveland to an 8-4 victory. Ezequiel Carrera and Kosuke Fukudome added two RBI apiece and Shelley Duncan chipped in with two hits, including a double for the Indians, who snapped a four-game skid.
Jeanmar Gomez (3-2) tossed six strong innings, yielding two runs on six hits while fanning three without issuing a walk.
Gordon Beckham went 2-for-4 with a double and Juan Pierre smacked an RBI double for the White Sox, who failed to carry over momentum from an 8-1 rout on Thursday.
Mark Buehrle (11-8) was tagged with the loss after giving up seven runs on eight hits in 5 2/3 innings. He struck out four and walked two.
Tonight, Chicago will rely on right-hander Philip Humber, who is 9-8 with a 3.45 ERA. Humber was terrific in his first start in more than two weeks after taking a liner off his head, as he scattered six hits over seven scoreless innings to beat the Minnesota Twins.
"It feels like it's been a year since I had a win," Humber said. "The guys did a great job getting those runs early, and I just kind of got a lot of ground balls. It was a great feeling to have some success."
This will be Humber's second-ever start against the Indians.
Despite Friday's loss Chicago has gotten the better of its division rivals this season, winning eight of the 12 matchups, including four of the seven meetings in the Windy City.
