Weaver, Angels top A's to win series
Sep 15, 2011 - 1:55 AM Oakland, CA (Sports Network) - Jered Weaver tossed seven innings of one-run ball, and Mark Trumbo hit a two-run home run to give the Angels a 4-1 victory over the Athletics in the rubber match of a three-game set.Weaver (17-7) allowed six hits and a walk to record his career-high 17th win of the year.
"It's a great thing to have," said Weaver about his new career-high in wins. "It's not over yet. We still have a lot of things to accomplish as a team."
Bobby Abreu had two hits and an RBI for the Angels, who sit three games behind the Texas Rangers for first place in the AL West. Texas took a 9-1 victory over the Cleveland Indians on Wednesday.
Scott Downs threw a scoreless eighth and Jordan Walden closed out the game in the ninth to earn his 31st save of the year.
Rich Harden (4-3) allowed three runs on seven hits and a walk through 5 1/3 innings for the loss.
Josh Willingham homered for the A's, losers in six of their last nine games.
Oakland got on the board first on Willingham's solo shot in the third.
Howie Kendrick led off the sixth with a walk and rounded the bases on a double by Abreu. Two batters later, Trumbo sent a hanging slider over the left-center field wall to give the Angels a 3-1 lead and knock Harden out of the game.
"That's kind of been the story of my year so far," said Harden. "It's been making pitches late in the game, a mistake here or there that's cost me. It's frustrating to lose it like that."
Abreu worked a one-out walk in the eighth, moved to third on Trumbo's base hit to right and crossed the plate on second baseman Eric Sogard's missed catch error while Trumbo was stealing second to increase the Angels' lead.
The A's put runners in scoring position in the first three innings, but their best chance to score came in the first.
Cliff Pennington led off the inning with a single to right and was moved to second on Kurt Suzuki's sacrifice bunt. After Hideki Matsui fouled out to third, Willingham was hit by a pitch and David DeJesus was walked to load the bases. But Scott Sizemore flied out to left to end the inning.
Oakland finished the game 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position and stranded nine men on base.
