White Sox, Royals resume set in KC
Sep 16, 2011 - 3:06 PMVideo
A first-round draft pick - third overall - by the New York Mets in 2004, Humber debuted with the Mets in 2006 and made 26 appearances, but only one start, with them, the Minnesota Twins and the Royals through 2010 while going 2-1 with one hold.
Humber joined the White Sox to begin 2011 and has made 23 starts in 25 games, including his ninth win of the season when he won at Minnesota, 2-1, on Sept. 5 after allowing six hits in seven scoreless innings.
He's made one start since and gave up seven hits and two runs in six innings of Chicago's 7-3 victory over Cleveland.
Humber has allowed five hits and two runs in four career innings against the Royals in two relief appearances.
On Thursday, Kansas City's Billy Butler crushed a three-run homer and Melky Cabrera added a solo shot en route to a 4-for-5 night as the Royals pounded the White Sox, 7-2. Salvador Perez smacked three hits, coming a home run shy of the cycle and Eric Hosmer tacked on a pair of hits for the Royals, winners of five straight games for the first time since Sept. 7-11, 2009.
Jeff Francis (6-16) was solid in his final outing of the season, giving up two runs on eight hits over six innings. He fanned two and walked two.
A.J. Pierzynski went 3-for-4 with a double and Gordon Beckham added a double for the White Sox, who have lost five straight and were officially eliminated from the race for an American League Central title.
Mark Buehrle (11-9) lasted 6 1/3 innings, giving up seven runs -- six earned -- on a career-high 15 hits while striking out only one and walking two.
Right-hander Felipe Paulino gets the call for the Royals for the 19th time since coming to them earlier this season.
The 27-year-old began 2011 with the Colorado Rockies and made 18 relief appearances with an 0-4 record and two holds before coming to Kansas City and becoming a full-time starter.
He's made 17 starts in 18 subsequent games with the Royals and is 3-6 with a 4.10 earned run average across 107 2/3 innings.
Paulino won three games with Houston in 2009 and equaled that career high on Sept. 10 with a 4-2 victory at Seattle.
He won his only career start against the White Sox.
The Royals have won seven of their 12 matchups with the White Sox this season.
