Rangers seek bounce back at Safeco

Sep 17, 2011 - 2:52 PM (Sports Network) - The Texas Rangers wasted a chance at extending their lead in the American League West on Friday. Today, they try to get back into the win column when they continue a three-game set with the Seattle Mariners at Safeco Field.

The Rangers were stymied by Mariners rookie Blake Beavan in Friday's opener, as he tossed eight scoreless innings in Seattle's 4-0 win.

Beavan (5-5) scattered four hits without a walk while striking out three and Brandon League pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for the Mariners, who have won their past two.

"He threw a great ball game for us tonight," said Seattle manager Eric Wedge about Beavan. "He only got into one tough situation out there and he was able to get out of it easy. The guy has a lot of confidence."

Casper Wells scored twice and hit a solo home run while Mike Carp also had an RBI in the win.

C.J. Wilson (16-7) was tagged for four runs -- one earned -- on six hits in 6 1/3 innings for the Rangers, who had a four-game winning streak snapped.

Texas, though, maintained its 3 1/2-game lead over the Angels for first place in the AL West as the Angels lost to equally woeful Baltimore on Friday.

Getting the call for the Rangers today will be righty Colby Lewis, who is 12-10 with a 4.29 ERA. Lewis beat the Oakland Athletics last Friday, holding them to three runs and five hits in 7 1/3 innings.

"I felt better as the game went on," Lewis said. "It's all about location, getting ahead in pitcher's counts rather than hitter's counts. Keeping the ball down in the zone."

Lewis has faced the Mariners 16 times (12 starts) and is 5-4 with a 3.32 ERA against them.

Seattle will counter with rookie left-hander Anthony Vasquez, who has lost his last three starts. Vasquez gave up just two runs in six innings on Sunday to Kansas City, but fell to 1-3 on the year to go along with a 7.29 ERA.

This will be his first-ever appearance against the Rangers.

Despite Friday's loss, Texas has dominated the Mariners this season, taking 10 of the 14 matchups, including five of the eight meetings in Seattle.
