Millwood goes for Rockies in opener with Padres

Sep 19, 2011 - 3:02 PM (Sports Network) - Veteran right-hander Kevin Millwood makes his eighth start with the Colorado Rockies tonight when they host the San Diego Padres in the opener of a three-game series at Coors Field.

A 36-year-old from North Carolina, Millwood debuted with the Rockies on Aug. 10 after spending the early part of the season in the minor leagues with the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox organizations.

He was 0-1 in his initial two starts, but has gone 3-1 in five outings since, including a 6-2 win at Milwaukee on Sept. 14, when he tossed six innings of two-run ball while walking two and striking out two.

His fifth start with Colorado came at San Diego and ended in a 3-0 win after he tossed seven innings and allowed three hits with no walks and eight strikeouts.

Millwood is 8-1 with a 2.84 earned run average in 16 career starts against San Diego.

For the Padres, second-year lefty Cory Luebke tries to end a skid that's kept him winless since Aug. 16.

The 26-year-old improved to 5-6 on the season with a 6-1 win over the New York Mets one month ago, but is 0-3 in five starts, though he's allowed three runs or less in four of the five outings.

He dropped a 5-4 verdict to Colorado on Sept. 3 after being touched for five runs on eight hits in 4 1/3 innings. He's 0-2 lifetime against the Rockies in nine career meetings and 2-5 on the road in 2011 in 22 appearances.

On Sunday in Denver, Pablo Sandoval homered twice during an eight-run fourth inning, and the streaking San Francisco Giants teed off against the Rockies, belting a season-high six long balls in a 12-5 romp.

Seth Smith and Ty Wigginton both had two hits and an RBI for Colorado. Esmil Rogers (6-6) was tagged for nine runs and seven hits in 3 2/3 innings.

In San Diego, Paul Goldschmidt homered and drove in three runs as Arizona downed San Diego, 5-1, in the finale of a three-game set.

Jason Bartlett's third-inning RBI groundout was the lone offense for the Padres, who have dropped four of six.

Aaron Harang (13-7) pitched well in defeat, allowing eight hits and two runs in six full frames.

The Rockies have won nine of 15 against the Padres this season, with the club's splitting six meetings so far in Colorado.
