A 23-year-old, Bass was a fifth-round pick of the Padres in 2008 and debuted with them on June 13 in Denver, where he tossed five innings of five-hit, one- run ball in a 3-1 win over the Rockies.
He was shifted to the bullpen for his next appearance on July 1 and stayed there through mid-September, maintaining a 1.88 earned run average through what's now been 38 1/3 big-league innings.
Included have been three more appearances against the Rockies, in which he's allowed no runs and no hits in three innings with one walk.
On Tuesday, Mat Latos came within one out of his second career shutout as the Padres fended off the Rockies, 2-1.
Dexter Fowler hit a blooper to shallow center that resulted in a one-out double in the home ninth. Two batters later, Jordan Pacheco grounded a run- scoring single up the middle to chase Latos (8-14) from the game.
Heath Bell gave up a single to Kevin Kouzmanoff before striking out Wilin Rosario to notch his 40th save of the season.
Latos scattered six hits, walked one and struck out nine.
Orlando Hudson and Jeremy Hermida each knocked in a run for San Diego, which has won four of its last five games.
Jhoulys Chacin (11-13) allowed two runs -- one earned -- on six hits in six innings for the Rockies, who were dealt their sixth straight loss.
Colorado starts veteran righty Aaron Cook, who aims for his first win in more than a month.
The Kentucky native was 3-7 on the season after a 12-5 defeat of Florida on Aug. 17, when he went 7 2/3 innings and allowed nine hits and three runs.
He's 0-2 in four starts since while giving up 26 hits and 18 runs in 16 1/3 innings.
Cook is 14-6 lifetime against the Padres with a 2.98 ERA in 181 innings.
The Rockies have won nine of 17 against the Padres this season.
