Mets place RHP Sosa on DL, recall RHP Pelfrey

Jul 1, 2007 - 5:33 PM PHILADELPHIA (Ticker) -- The New York Mets placed righthander Jorge Sosa on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left hamstring prior to Sunday's game against the Philadelphia Phillies.

Filling Sosa's spot on the roster is pitching prospect Mike Pelfrey, who was recalled from Class AAA New Orleans and will start Sunday.

The 30-year-old Sosa suffered the injury running out a bunt in the top of the sixth inning of the Mets' 8-3 victory on Saturday. He did pick up his seventh win of the season in the contest, allowing three runs and four hits in five innings.

The righthander has been a key member in the rotation for the Mets, compiling a 7-3 record and a 3.92 ERA in 11 starts.

The loss of Sosa was another bit of bad news for the starting staff of New York, which scratched Oliver Perez from Sunday's game due to a stiff back.

Perez, who is 7-6 with a 3.14 ERA in 15 starts, could start on Tuesday against the Colorado Rockies, according to Mets manager Willie Randolph.

One of the top pitching prospects in the organization, Pelfrey returns to New York for the first time since being optioned down to New Orleans on May 13. Prior to the demotion, the 23-year-old righthander went 0-5 with a 6.53 ERA in six starts.

Pelfrey was 2-2 with a 3.44 ERA in seven starts with New Orleans.
