Phillips lifts Reds over Phillies
Apr 16, 2013 - 2:39 AM Cincinnati, OH (Sports Network) - Brandon Phillips broke a tie with a two-run single in the bottom of the eighth inning, and the Cincinnati Reds ended a five-game losing streak with a 4-2 win over the Philadelphia Phillies at Great American Ball Park.A pinch-hitting Derrick Robinson singled off Philadelphia reliever Jeremy Horst (0-1) to begin the frame. Starter Cliff Lee had tossed six scoreless innings before giving up two runs in the seventh.
After Shin-Soo Choo bunted Robinson to second base and Zack Cozart doubled, Horst intentionally walked Joey Votto to load the bases, prompting a pitching change.
Mike Adams came on to face Phillips, who put Cincinnati in front with a base hit to right field.
"I understand what (Philadelphia manager Charlie Manuel) was trying to do, but I had a chip on my shoulder right there and I'm glad I came through," Phillips said.
Aroldis Chapman closed the door in the ninth, earning his third save of the season.
The Phillies had erased a 2-0 deficit on Chase Utley's two-run, pinch-hit homer in the top of the eighth. The two-out blast was one of five hits given up by Cincinnati starter Bronson Arroyo (2-1).
"It's too bad. We tied the game, but we couldn't hold them," Manuel said.
The Reds broke through against Lee in the seventh.
Votto led off with a single and Phillips doubled down the left-field line. Votto then scored and Phillips moved to third on a wild pitch by Lee.
After Lee walked Jay Bruce, the first free pass issued by the left-hander this season, Todd Frazier plated Phillips with a sacrifice fly to right field.
The Reds were threatening for more when Lee fielded Chris Heisey's comebacker and made a low throw to second, allowing Bruce to reach. Lee, though, escaped further damage by getting Ryan Hanigan to ground into an inning-ending double play.
Game Notes
The Reds placed starting pitcher Johnny Cueto on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to Sunday, with a strained right lat and selected the contract of pitcher Justin Freeman from Triple-A Louisville. To make room for Freeman on the 40-man roster, the Reds transferred outfielder Ryan Ludwick to the 60-day DL ... The Phillies took four of seven from the Reds last season.
