Zito aims for another win in Milwaukee
Apr 16, 2013 - 7:17 PMVideo
Zito has opened the year with two straight wins and has yet to surrender a run. After tossing seven scoreless innings in his season debut, Zito again did not allow a runner to score on Wednesday against Colorado, as he scattered seven hits and walk in his team's 10-0 win.
"You can't have more confidence than what Barry has right now," Giants manager Bruce Bochy remarked.
Including the postseason, San Francisco has won the last 16 times that Zito has started, a stretch that dates all the way back to Aug. 7, 2012.
Zito, though, is just 2-4 in nine starts against the Brewers.
San Francisco won for the sixth time in seven tries on Sunday, as Hunter Pence's two-out home run in the ninth inning forced extras and San Francisco scored three runs in the 10th to pull out a 10-7 win at Wrigley Field.
"It's a great feeling, but I am just grateful for the team. That's what we're here for. We're out here battling for each other, so it just feels good to help the team out," Pence said.
After allowing the game-tying home run to Pence, Cubs reliever Shawn Camp balked in the decisive run with no outs in the 10th. Camp allowed four runs and five hits in 1 2/3 innings.
Pence went 3-for-4 with two runs and a stolen base for the Giants, who remain atop the NL West standings with the win. Gregor Blanco and Nick Noonan each contributed two RBI.
Milwaukee, meanwhile, salvaged the finale of a three-game set with the St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday, as Jonathan Lucroy cranked a solo homer deep to left-center off Fernando Salas in the 10th inning to lead the Brewers to a 4-3 comeback win.
Ryan Braun also ended a string of 39 consecutive scoreless frames by the Cardinals' pitching staff with a two-run blast in the eighth.
Yuniesky Betancourt sent the game to extras with an RBI double off Mitchell Boggs in the ninth, and three relievers closed out the win in the 10th to end Milwaukee's three-game slide.
"Any time is a good time for a homer, but this was nice," Lucroy said.
Heading to the hill for the Brewers on Tuesday will be righty Wily Peralta, who is 0-1 with a 4.50 ERA. Peralta did not get a decision last Tuesday versus the Cubs, as he surrendered three runs (2 earned) and six hits in 6 2/3 innings.
Peralta has never faced the Giants.
