Cardinals RHP Carpenter pitches three innings in rehab start

Jul 8, 2007 - 7:11 PM MELBOURNE, Florida (Ticker) -- St. Louis Cardinals righthander Chris Carpenter made his second rehabilitation start for Class A Palm Beach on Sunday.

Making his way back from elbow surgery, Carpenter worked three scoreless innings against Brevard County. He threw 39 pitches, allowing two hits, walking one and striking out two.

The 32-year-old struggled in his first rehab start, surrendering five runs and five hits in just 1 1/3 innings. Carpenter hopes to be back in the Cardinals' rotation following the All-Star break.

Carpenter has missed almost the entire season after undergoing surgery to remove bone spurs in his pitching elbow on May 8. The 2005 National League Cy Young Award winner was placed on the disabled list on April 2, one day after his Opening Day start against the New York Mets.
