Lee strong as Phils down Giants
May 7, 2013 - 7:04 AMVideo
Lee (3-2) fanned six and surrendered just five hits for Philadelphia, which was coming off an embarrassing 14-2 loss against the lowly Miami Marlins.
"We underperformed this first month, and it's time for us to turn it on. Tonight was a good start in that direction," Lee said.
Michael Young slapped two doubles among his three hits, drove in two and scored a run in the triumph.
Hunter Pence smacked a solo homer and a double among his three hits for the Giants, who had their six-game winning streak snapped.
"Pence had a great night, but it was a rough night for the rest of the group," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said.
Madison Bumgarner (3-1) allowed five runs on eight hits and two walks over six innings to pick up his first loss of the year.
The Phillies jumped out to a 5-1 lead after plaing three runs in the second and two more in the fifth.
With the bases loaded and two away in the second, Young ripped a two-run, one- hop double into the right field corner before Chase Utley scampered home on a wild pitch.
San Francisco got a run back in the home half on Pence's solo shot into the left-field seats, but Delmon Young's sacrifice fly and Domonic Brown's solo homer over the wall in right made it a four-run spread after five frames.
Pence doubled to begin the eighth and scored on Jimmy Rollins' throwing error on Francisco Peguero's infield single to cut the gap to 5-2.
Philly, though, added insurance in the ninth on Rollins' sacrifice fly and Jonathan Papelbon secured the win with a 1-2-3 bottom half.
Game Notes
The Phillies were 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position and left seven men on base ... Brown's homer was his sixth of the year ... Pence cracked his sixth round-tripper of the season.
