Phillies win another close one over Red Sox

May 30, 2013 - 4:34 AM Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Dominic Brown homered twice to back six solid innings from Kyle Kendrick, and Philadelphia clipped Boston, 4-3, in the opener of a two-game interleague set.

"I'm seeing it pretty well lately," Brown said. 'I'm getting good pitches to hit. After the first at-bat, I swung at a bad pitch, I told myself to wait for one to handle."

Ryan Howard and Erik Kratz also went deep for the Phillies, who have won two in a row over the BoSox since Monday's loss at Fenway Park.

Kendrick (5-3) allowed four hits and a pair of runs, walking three and striking out as many over six innings. Antonio Bastardo and Mike Adams each tossed a scoreless inning in relief, while Jonathan Papelbon survived a late Boston rally to earn his 11th save of the season and second in as many games.

Daniel Nava homered, with Jacoby Ellsbury and Dustin Pedroia knocking in a run apiece for the Red Sox.

John Lackey (3-5) also toiled six full frames, but was charged in the setback with six hits and three runs.

Brown provided some insurance for the hosts with a leadoff shot deep into the right-field seats in the home half of the eighth for a 4-2 game.

I'm impressed by his mind-set, going out there swinging. I'm not surprised by it at all," Howard said of Brown's recent run of success which has him atop the team list in home runs.

After Jackie Bradley, Jr. fanned, Papelbon retired David Ortiz on a pop up in between a Stephen Drew walk and single to Jonny Gomes, then Ellsbury fought off a pitch and dumped it just beyond Brown's reach down the left-field line to score Drew for a one-run contest.

Nava, however, grounded to Howard to end the contest.

The Sox picked up a run in the first on Ellsbury's leadoff triple and a Pedroia fly to right.

Howard's leadoff homer just over the wall in left evened the game in the home second, but the slugger couldn't provide further offense with two on and two out in the home third.

Brown and Kratz hit back-to-back one-out homers in the fourth, then Nava countered in the sixth with a leadoff shot to bring Boston within a run.

"It's a little frustrating, but that's how the game is played here," said Lackey about giving up three of Philly's four longballs. "The ballpark got me a little tonight."

The Phils had runners on the corners with one out in the sixth, but Lackey ended his night by inducing an inning-ending double-play grounder from Freddy Galvis.

Bastardo subbed for Kendrick in the seventh, and though he put two on with one out, Ellsbury fanned looking and Nava grounded into a fielder's choice to end the threat.

"The opportunities were there. To their credit, they made pitches with men on base," said Red Sox manager John Farrell about his club's struggle to plate baserunners.

In the bottom of the frame, Andrew Miller loaded the bases with one out after a Ben Revere single and walks to Kevin Frandsen and Jimmy Rollins, then departed after striking out Howard. Koji Uehara forced a John Mayberry pop up to keep it a one-run game.

Game Notes

The consecutive homers by Brown and Kratz marked the fifth time the Phillies have accomplished the feat in 2013 ... Before allowing a ninth-inning run, Papelbon extended his streak to 19 1/3 scoreless innings ... Prior to the game, Boston recalled Bradley from Triple-A Pawtucket and optioned pitcher Alex Wilson to Pawtucket ... The Phillies placed third baseman Michael Young on the bereavement list and recalled infielder Cesar Hernandez from Triple-A Lehigh Valley.
