Reds' Bailey takes ball in matchup with Rockies
Jun 4, 2013 - 2:39 PM (Sports Network) - Right-hander Homer Bailey will try to match a teammate's mound gem on Tuesday night when the Cincinnati Reds host the Colorado Rockies in the middle portion of a three-game series at Great American Ball Park. The Reds took the opener of the series on Monday night, when Bronson Arroyo threw eight shutout innings in the Reds' 3-0 triumph.
Arroyo (6-5) allowed just four hits, two of them from Carlos Gonzalez, and needed just 86 pitches. He also had three strikeouts, pulling him within three of tying Gary Nolan for eighth-most in franchise history.
"I didn't particularly have amazing stuff, but it was one of those games where things just worked out," Arroyo said.
Aroldis Chapman threw a scoreless ninth to notch his 15th save.
Jay Bruce went 3-for-4 with a two-run homer and two runs scored, while Todd Frazier contributed an RBI to give the Reds their sixth straight win against the Rockies for the first time since 2000-01.
Colorado pitcher Tyler Chatwood (3-1) allowed one run on four hits and a walk in four innings before leaving the game with right triceps soreness. In the top of the fifth inning, he pulled up before reaching first base while trying for a bunt single.
"It's frustrating having to come out of the game like that and kind of leave the bullpen hanging like that, but it was precautionary," Chatwood said.
Bailey, a first-round pick in 2004, was unbeaten in four starts between May 7 and May 25 before dropping a 7-1 verdict at Cleveland Thursday in which he surrendered seven runs on seven hits in 3 2/3 innings.
His last home start resulted in a 5-2 victory over the Chicago Cubs, who managed two runs on five hits in six innings.
Bailey is 2-0 in five starts in Cincinnati this season and 20-19 there in his career, as opposed to 21-18 in 57 road starts.
He's 1-2 in five lifetime meetings with the Rockies.
Colorado goes with 26-year-old Dominican Juan Nicasio, who faces the Reds for the first time in his 36th major-league start.
Nicasio was a 5-0 winner against San Francisco after tossing six innings of three-hit ball on May 19, but has taken a loss and a no-decision in two subsequent starts.
In fact, the defeat of the Giants is his lone win since April 26 - a span of six starts.
He was beaten, 7-5, by Houston Thursday, when he allowed five runs and seven hits in five innings.
Nicasio is 2-1 in six road starts this season, but just 2-5 on the road in 16 career appearances.
The Reds won five of six from the Rockies in 2012, while Colorado won the 2011 series, 4-3.
