Cueto set to return as Reds conclude series with Brewers

Jun 16, 2013 - 12:14 PM (Sports Network) - Cincinnati Reds right-hander Johnny Cueto comes off the disabled list for a second time this season and will face the Milwaukee Brewers Sunday afternoon in the conclusion of a three-game series.

Cueto hasn't pitched since May 31 due to a strained right shoulder. He's yet to lose in six starts this season. Cueto's regular season unbeaten string goes back nine starts (5-0) to his Sept. 15 defeat at Miami.

Cueto, who was out five weeks earlier this season due to a strained left upper-back muscle, is 4-3 with a 3.44 ERA in 13 career games against the Brewers.

Wily Peralta, who has just one win in his last seven outings, counters for the Brewers. The righty didn't get a decision at Miami Tuesday after allowing five hits and three runs in six innings. The Brewers are 5-9 in his starts this season and opponents are batting .304 against him.

Peralta is 0-1 with a 2.38 ERA in two career starts versus Cincinnati, both coming at Great American Ball Park.

Yesterday, Logan Schafer tied a career high with three hits, part of a 3-for-4 effort with a pair of doubles and two RBI, as Milwaukee silenced Cincinnati, 6-0.

Juan Francisco hit a two-run homer and drove in three runs for the Brewers, while Yovani Gallardo (6-6) gave up three hits and two walks along with five strikeouts over six sterling innings.

"I've felt really good my last three starts, going back to the one at home against Oakland (on June 5)," said Gallardo. "It seems like I'm getting it together and staying within myself. I'm commanding the fastball on both sides of the plate."

Jonathan Lucroy added two hits and scored twice for Milwaukee, which blanked an opponent for the first time all season.

Jay Bruce and Ryan Hanigan each collected a pair of hits for the Reds, but starter Homer Bailey (4-5) was touched for six runs and eight hits over seven full frames.

"They got a couple of mistakes that they hit for singles down the line and then I made some really good pitches that they put in play, so it's kind of a tough one to swallow," Bailey said. "It's not like we walked a bunch of people or they were banging them off the walls."

Cincinnati, which has dropped two of three, was held scoreless for the first time since April 26.

The Reds swept a three-game series versus the Brewers from May 10-12 in Cincinnati, and won nine of 15 games with Milwaukee in 2012.
