Mets shoot for another win against Braves

Jun 19, 2013 - 6:11 PM (Sports Network) - The New York Mets gave their fans a glimpse into the future on Tuesday. On Wednesday, they'll try to hand the Atlanta Braves their first home series loss of the season in the third test of a five-game series at Turner Field.

After losing Monday's opener, New York swept a day/night doubleheader from the National League East leaders on Tuesday behind a pair of dominating pitching performances from two of their top prospects.

Matt Harvey flirted with a no-hitter and struck out a career-best 13 batters to lead the Mets to a 4-3 win in the opener. Then in the nightcap phenom Zach Wheeler tossed six scoreless innings in his major league debut to pace New York's 6-1 win.

"He's got electric stuff, he was throwing everything for strikes today," said Braves second baseman Dan Uggla said of Harvey. "He was working both sides of the plate. His fastball was 95-100 mph, we couldn't catch up to him."

Atlanta actually made things interesting in the first game, as it scored three times in the eighth to pull within one, but Bobby Parnell recorded the final four outs for his 10th save of the season.

Wheeler, meanwhile, struck out seven in his outing, but also walked five batters.

"It was definitely an experience," said Wheeler. "I had some jitters going at first. Then I settled down a little bit, probably the fourth or fifth inning. I just found a rhythm and I was able to throw my pitches for strikes. That definitely helped me out."

Atlanta, which has dropped six of nine, still leads the division by seven games over both Washington and Philadelphia. A big reason behind its success has been its play at Turner Field, where it is 24-10.

A loss on Wednesday though would secure the Braves' first series loss in Dixie since dropping two of three to Philadelphia from Aug. 31-Sept. 2.

Trying to avoid that will be righty Kris Medlen, who is 3-7 with a 3.09 ERA. Medlen had a two-start winning streak stopped on Friday against San Francisco, as the Giants reached him for four runs and nine hits in six innings.

Medlen is 3-0 against the Mets with a 1.92 ERA in 16 games (6 starts).

New York, meanwhile, will counter with righty Shaun Marcum, who is still searching for his first victory of the season. Marcum fell to 0-8 on Friday versus the Chicago Cubs, as he was lit up for six runs and seven hits in 5 2/3 innings to raise his ERA to 5.43.

"Shaun is a professional. He knows you've got to go out and get the job done," manager Terry Collins said. "He just got off to a bad start. I'm sure he wishes he could take a couple pitches back."

Marcum has faced the Braves five times and is 1-1 with a 2.87 ERA.

Atlanta has split eight matchups with the Mets this season.
