Phils try to slow down Mets
Jun 21, 2013 - 2:46 PM (Sports Network) - The Philadelphia Phillies have a good shot at bouncing back into the win column when they open a three-game series Friday versus the NL East-rival New York Mets at Citizens Bank Park. The Phillies have won five of six matchups with the Mets this season and are 9-1 in the last 10 meetings between the clubs.
Philadelphia had won two straight and four of six games overall, but was denied a three-game sweep of the visiting Washington Nationals with Wednesday's 6-2 loss in 11 innings. Ian Desmond delivered a huge blow with a grand slam in the top of the 11th inning off Phillies reliever Michael Stutes.
"He came back with a slider. The ball was down and Desmond hit it out," Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said.
Michael Young hit a two-run homer in the first inning and Kyle Kendrick pitched well in the no-decision, as he allowed one run in 7 2/3 innings. Ben Revere extended his hitting streak to 10 games.
Cole Hamels will take the mound for the Phillies in search of his third win of the season and is 2-10 with a 4.40 earned run average in 15 starts. Hamels lost his last time out in a 5-2 setback at Colorado on Sunday and gave up three runs in seven innings. Hamels beat the Mets back on April 28 and is only 6-10 with a 4.20 ERA in 22 career starts against them.
The Mets have been playing better of late with four wins in the last six tries and are 3-2 so far on an 11-game road trip.
New York's three wins in the past five contests were against the NL East- leading Atlanta Braves. In Thursday's 4-3 win at Turner Field, pinch-hitter Josh Satin stroked a go-ahead double in the top of the seventh to keep the Mets ahead for good.
David Wright belted a pair of homers in his three-hit performance and Andrew Brown delivered a pinch-hit homer for the Mets. Jon Niese lasted just 3 1/3 innings because of shoulder discomfort and gave up three runs and eight hits, while LaTroy Hawkins tossed two scoreless innings of relief to pick up the win. Bobby Parnell closed the door on the Braves in the ninth for his 11th save.
"It's a lot more fun to win, no matter what position you're in," Wright said. "We've had our struggles in Atlanta, but we kicked it off with the doubleheader and we were able to take the rubber match."
Jeremy Hefner gets the nod for New York and is only 1-6 with a 3.96 ERA in 14 games (13 starts) this season. He last toed the rubber in Sunday's 4-3 win against the Chicago Cubs and gave up three runs -- one earned -- in five innings.
Hefner lost to the Phillies back on April 10 and is 1-2 with a 15.68 ERA in four games (3 starts) against them in his career.
