Angels aim to extend win streak over Tigers
Jun 26, 2013 - 2:34 PM (Sports Network) - If only the Angels could play the Tigers all the time. The LA Angels of Anaheim look to continue their recent domination of Detroit when the two clubs resume a three-game series Wednesday at Comerica Park.
Anaheim opened this set with Tuesday's 14-8 bashing of the Tigers, as J.B. Shuck finished 3-for-5 with four RBI and Josh Hamilton added three hits, an RBI and three runs scored. Hamilton was in the lineup for the first time since last Thursday due to a wrist issue.
Mike Trout, Hank Conger and Erick Aybar had two RBI apiece for the Angels, who blew the game open with an eight-run fifth inning, have won all four meetings with Detroit this season and seven straight overall in this series.
Angels starting pitcher C.J. Wilson wasn't sharp, but managed to get the win even though he allowed five runs and seven hits in five innings. Luckily for Wilson, the Tigers committed six errors.
"Individually I'd have to say it was one of my worst outings of the year," Wilson said.
The Angels ended a three-game losing streak after they were swept by Pittsburgh over the weekend and are 7-5 in the past 12 contests.
Hoping to keep the mastery of the Tigers intact Wednesday will be Angels hurler Tommy Hanson. Hanson is 2-0 in his past three starts and did not receive a decision in last Thursday's 10-9 win over Seattle, as he went just two innings and was tagged for seven runs and six hits.
Hanson, a right-hander, is 4-2 in nine starts with a 5.10 ERA and defeated Detroit back on April 19 with six shutout innings in an 8-1 win. In two career starts against Detroit, Hanson is 1-1 with a 4.66 ERA. He is 2-0 in three starts away from home this season.
The Tigers had won two in a row and three of four games until coming up short in the series opener with the Angels. The six errors committed were the most since Sept. 11, 1982 against Boston. Detroit had two errors in the Angels' eight-run fifth inning.
Rick Porcello drew the start for Detroit and was dealt the loss for permitting seven runs and 10 hits in 4 1/3 innings.
"I did not throw the ball tonight like I had been over the course of the season," Porcello said. "I just didn't make good pitches, especially with two strikes."
Miguel Cabrera hit a two-run homer to extend his hitting streak to 10 games, Torii Hunter went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and Victor Martinez drove in a pair of runs in defeat.
Detroit, which is 4-4 on a 10-game homestand, still leads the AL Central by 3 1/2 games ahead of Cleveland and will send Jose Alvarez to the mound Wednesday. Alvarez will make the third start of his career and is 1-0 with a 2.45 earned run average over the first two outings.
Alvarez made his major league debut in a 4-1 win over the Indians on June 9, tossing six innings of one-run ball with seven K's for the win, then did not receive a decision in last Thursday's 4-3 victory versus Boston. The young lefty gave up two runs in five innings, striking out three and walking two.
